Stabbing in the dark here hopefully enough techies to assist.

I want to try and get some TV programme`s from DVD to a CD!

Reason is I have a new phone (SPV M500) and it has windows media player and takes SD cards. So I would like to try and put some short TV show`s to watch on it/them.

    That`s the easy bit

    Now the hard bit!

    I use a Gas powered PC :D
    PIII 450
    8GB
    64MB
With a CD-RW but no DVD drive :-(

Is there anyway possible to try and record from a DVD onto a CD-RW so then I can load it onto a SD card and watch away!

So you want to copy a DVD to CDR but you don't have aDVD drive. Hmm, the only way I know of would be to conect a DVD player to a Video Capture card then save it to the Hard Drive. Or you could just use Nero to copy DVD to CD but you'll need a DVD drive and lose quality.

I'd just "splash out" on a DVD drive. £20 and it'll save a lot of hassle.
Converting them will take many, many hours though on a system that old.

You could be a naughty boy and download the films. Why do you need to put them on CD as well? Why not simply rip dvds to the computer, compress them, and copy onto SD?

Edit: Also hard disk is rather small for ripping films - particularly since most(full) DVDs are larger than your drive ;-)

Damn dude, time to get a new computer.

There's a program called DVD Shrink that will let you copy a DVD to two CDs. But you still need a DVD drive.

You could just borrow a friend's laptop or something. I'm sure you know at least one person with a DVD drive.

Looks like a new computer may have to be in Santa`s Sack this Christmas

It was just that I treated myself to the Boxed Set of Third Rock From The Sun and they are only 20mins per episode when the ad`s have been removed. But there is about 180 episodes. So I was hoping I could get an episode or two onto a reasonable size SD Card

    Thanks chap`s!!!!

Or play them on a DVD player on a nice large TV screen ;)

Yes, its cool being able to watch things wherever, but sometimes the screen is a bit too small on a phone/PSP. Same goes for those portable xbox/ps2 screens.

Oh, and people seem to have forgotten what phones are for! And the fact that mobiles may well be hazardous to our health! Still, the phone companies had to get us hooked somehow...

I don't know if it has any use here, but I use AutoGK for ripping DVDs. Someone here mentioned it, and I've been using it ever since.

There are programs that convert DVD video to SVCDs that or you'll need another software decoder/encoder so that you can create a video any megabyte size you want.

For example, i have doctor divx and converted whole DVD movies into 700mb videos, takes my PC, which the spec are listed below, about 16hours to convert that AND keep it at 512kbitrate variable and around 480x480 resolution which is good quality, not top notch but great when viewed on a TV, no pixelation.

    Specs:

    AMD 3200Xp
ATI All in wonder 9600 Pro (A/V inputs/outputs and built in TV-Tuner and FM radio)
    1gig RAM
    2x 80gig C: drive set up as RAID 1
    120gig F: back up drive
    SB Live! 5.1

16 hours? It takes mine about 3 to do everything, and I have an older Pentium 4 (2.3 ghz, 768 RAM, etc.). Am I missing something here?

I'm not quite sure. The final output looks fine to me (then again, I'm not hard to please with video). They're usually about 700 mb in size, and I use either Xvid or DivX to encode. I'll look when I get home.

Well I use Dr. Divx. I dont know if its as effecient as other divx encoders out there but this is much simpler to use and more straightforward. The way I have it set up is to do a 2-pass encoding, takes 8 hours each. Remember its also resizing the resolution from 720x480, to something smaller yet still look like the original when shown on the TV. Also, the files I did that took my PC 16hours where a 4hour long videos.

so you wanna see them on your phone? first you have to find out what your phone can play and also what bitrate it will handle.

That explains it a bit more, since the DVDs I usually copy are around 1 1/2 hours each. AutoGK does two passes, but I don't think it resizes.

oh taemos, you cant have 1 1/2 hrs of video on a 700mb cd without resizing :), with avc maybe you can, divx/xvid, nah.

I use a 1.4gig CPU PC with only 300 odd Meg memory and that takes ages to encode videos so one as old as virtual alans will take forever.

Why not convert the files to 3gp format or what ever it's called. You can convert them with the Nokia Media player. I did that with Black Adder and got each episode down to 15 or 16 meg each !! Which means after sticking 70 odd MP4 audio tracks and 6 Black Adder episodes I've still got over half of my 512meg SD card left.

I guess it does it "behind the scenes" then. I really don't know anything about ripping DVDs - that's what I have this program for ^_^.
