Found this link over on IGN today - http://users.skynet.be/firefly/gba/e-reader/ - where someone has cracked the e-Reader dot code format, making it possible to create homebrew e-Reader games. This defiantely beats spending $100 on a dev cart, but my question is - how do you use it? The guy explains how to print the codes, but I'm not quite sure I follow how to get from program to image, as the readmes in the tools are fairly sparse. I'm no programmer, but this seems simple enough to try and futz with... :smt017 Oh and by the way, something that's been bugging me about e-reader cards - what's to stop people from just photocopying them, or scanning them in at high dpi for printing out over the net? Do they write the low cost of them off as nothing to worry about, or is there some fun "Void" that shows up or something? This isn't because I want to pirate the things (oh no, they are SOO expensive at $4 a pack -_-) but just a question of curiousity.
I read somewhere that it's got some kind of super duper micro-printing on it that is as of yet unreproduceable by phtocopier or printer. Don't know how accurate this info is though.
Ah...you can use 10kb total...I believe...I think the E reader allows you to scan 5 cards for a program... I know you can at least have more than 1 card for a program. Uggh...beer :drinkers:
5 cards, and (at least on my copy of Clu Clu land) 4 of them have barcodes on 2 edges of the card, if this helps.
For people that don't think you can store much info on small files, take a look at this game: http://www.theprodukkt.de/files/kkrieger-beta.zip It's only 96kb, but it needs a powerful computer because it creates everything in real time, and it uses a lot of the latest video tecnologies. Some screenshots of it: http://www.finalboss.com/galeria/PC/K/kkrieger/63989.jpg http://finalboss.globo.com/galeria/PC/K/kkrieger/63988.jpg http://finalboss.globo.com/galeria/PC/K/kkrieger/63987.jpg The game is still a beta and has a lot to be developed, but I think it's impressive nonetheless.
yeah, always count on the good ol' demoscene to come up with cool stuff like that :smt023 Anyway, I dont think that E-reader homebrew thingie is a good substitute for a flash cart. If you're looking for an alternative, I suggest http://www.lik-sang.com/list.php?category=51&
I am going to give the e-reader homebrew thing a go, that is if I can find any decent documentation to give me a point in the right direction. Its good if you dont want to splash out on any extra hardware (and already own an E-Reader), the GBA Flash carts arent exactly cheap.
I still remember seeing pictures of a device that let you plug normal CF cards into a GBA....so people only had to pay the price of the adapter if they already had some decent sized CF cards. But I haven't been able to find any information on this for a long time..... P.S. No, I'm not talking about the GBA Movie Player I have one of those and know the difference ^_^ This other one was for playing Homebrew stuff and/or ROMs
That CF thing is called a Game Wallet, it works with Flash2Advance flash cards... All it does is allow you to flash games on the run.
That isn't the thing I was talking about either (I've seen them too ). The thing I saw looked just like one of the GBA Flash carts except it had a slot in the top for you to slide in your CF card. Maybe I am just crazy....or it was a hoax or something......
