    Hey Guys and Gals

The current extent of my knowledge of the ps3 is from the dev wiki so at the moment I haven't had the opportunity of opening any consoles yet. My inquiry is, can a sata(150) controller of a phat console be upgraded using parts from a slim?

I've never seen discussions online regarding this so I'd guess that such a mod isn't possible.

    Be gentle with me folks!

Do you mean the Hard Drive be upgraded using a Hard drive from a PS3 slim model? Yes it can!

The PS3 can take any 2.5 Sata Hard drives or Solid Sate Drives. The drive you are fitting cannot be more then 9.5 milimeters high.

Personally I have fit a 1tb drive out of a laptop to mine, Works fine. Although I tried a 2tb drive any it could only see 1.75tb, so I stuck the 2tb in my PS4! I tried a SSD in my ps3, I didn't see much/if any improvement in speed.

Thanks for the info on the hdd! I didn't know the ps3 can read anything past 1tb. More specifically I was curious in knowing if any motherboard modification can be made to the on-board sata controller to improve a phat console from 1.5Gb/s to 3.0Gb/s by pulling parts from a slim motherboard. If it can be done the extra hdd performance would be awesome on a cecha01.

What makes you think the PS3 slim has a faster SATA controller?

Anything is possible given enough time, motivation, skill & money. I guess you mean would it be easy to upgrade the PS3 SATA controller & the answer would be no. Maybe in 30 years time when people have a PS3 running on the futures equivalent of an FPGA then you'll see a pimped out clone.

All PS3 models have an SATA-150 Controller.

PS3 slims did come with hard drives that are capable of SATA-300. But theses SATA-300 hard drives in the slims will still only operate at SATA-150 speeds.

    What up backwards compatibility.

The original XBox started with 8gb drives and moved to 10gb drives. Why? Microsoft wanted single platter HDDs for whatever reason and by the time the XBox got close to EOL the only sized platters made were 10gb.

Why it was never utilized I'll never know. Could've been useful but short of packing your XBox with a few hundred CDs worth of music I don't think you'd ever fill the save/music partition chunk of that 8gb.

whats the max throughput of a mechanical 2.5 drive anyway?

you could have a look, grab the data-sheet for the sata controller and see if there is a faster controller that is pin compatible but I highly doubt it...

would there be any benefit from a faster controller, you'll still be constrained by other things in the system, before the sata controller.
