Early online console gaming

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by SuperFunkNinjaYoshiiKun, Jul 23, 2004.

  1. Found an interesting article on The Lost Levels about the Baton Teleplay Modem for NES and Genesis. So, we nearly had online console gaming back in 1992. Interesting.

    Would have been interesting to see what games would have been produced and how well they would have ran using the modem.

    Technically we've had online consoles for ages....or at least Japan has. There was that funky modem thing for the Famicom that let you do home banking, right?

    ==Edit==

    My msitake, I mis-read that you put "Online Console Gaming" and not jsut "Online Consoles"

    There's another thread about this. They did test this in certain markets. There was a working system for while.

    What about X-Band modem for the SNES and the Sega Genesis, that was kind of like online gaming. Also, what about the Edge 16 for the Genesis?

    In Japan, the Super Famicom had the Sattellaview which was a big hit for online gaming back then. The Mega Drive too had a modem over in Japan but I think the reason Ninty done better was obviously because of user base but also that Sattelite was pretty huge in Japan at that time.

    Nintendo threw a huge amount of money behind the service too and the service was pretty special with St.Giga particapating heavily as well.

    Yes

    The Sega Channel was brought out in the US and Canada in the 90's. It sent you different games every month but I am not sure if they were full versions or if they were cut short.

    Don't forget the Brazilian versions, MEGA MODEM, MEGA MODEM 2, and TELE-BRADESCO.

    TELE-BRADESCO was a modem for people that had accounts on the Bradesco Bank. It has the same design as the MEGA MODEM 2, only different sticker on the "cartridge".

    Re: Yes

    Wasn't "Megaman: The Willy Wars" released in US, only through Sega Channel?

    The games on there were full versions, but the game would have to be redownloaded if you exited out of it, I belive it was also used to test cable internet i belive.

    I remember the Sega Channel pretty well. Around the early morning hours at the first of each month, they would have a online selection of ROMS you can play. There was also some crap about "Pay to play" games. It was a good way to sample and play games on the Genesis, but it was a pain in the ass to connect to. It lasted until 1996, where the servers went offline (Although I don't remember anything up to that point.)

    You can still find them on Ebay, but they are as useful as boat anchors now.
