I bid and won an auction with some console bits and bobs, at a very reasonable price as it was collection only. Sent a message asking when I could collect and a couple of hours later got an "auction cancel request" with a message from the seller saying they just checked and the stuff had been given away.

They seemed apologetic but part of me thinks maybe they just cancelled it cos they didn't get as much as they had hoped. Anyway I agreed to the cancellation but am now wondering what feedback, if any, I should leave. My gut instinct is to just leave neutral saying the auction was cancelled, and rate the item description as very poor seeing as the items weren't available. I mean surely they could've cancelled the auction prior to it ending stating they were no longer available?

Negative, its not like they can leave you anything but positive anyway.

Shouldnt have agreed to the cancellation either.

Imho, if you agreed to the cancellation then there is no need for a negative feedback because the seller will have ebay remove it anyway. What you should have done is not agree, open a case, get refund and then leave a negative feedback.

Getting the feedback removed is a grey area in this instance.

I know usually if the transaction hasnt happened, there can be no feedback. But this depends on who looks at the case and if the seller even knows you can get them removed.

But yes, as above - thats what you should have done.

Had this pulled on me once after I paid. I left no feedback on it. Guess I should have left negative since they obviously didn't count their stock...

Its not a case of not counting stock, its people wanting to do auctions and then not honour the finishing price as it was "too low".

I would leave a big fat Negative, even if the seller is genuine and telling the truth (i doubt it) they have wasted your time.

Leave the neutral but make it clear what they have done.

I'm getting tired of you always telling me how my OPINION OF MY OWN EXPERIENCES are wrong. I shared what happened to me and what I did since it is somewhat similar to what happened here.

Talking about the ops experience, as that is the point of the thread. I dont give 2 shits about your opinion about anything, right or wrong or anything else.

Yeah I'd leave a big fat neg too. It's the seller's responsibility to know for certain that they have an item before listing. If they are worried about an item selling for "too low" in an auction then they should put a reserve.

Problem is, they charge for reserves and it puts people off bidding. This is why people pull this shit. If the op hadn't agreed to cancel, the seller would have gotten a strike against their account, few of those and they can't sell (or have restrictions) - which is the only way this type of thing will stop.

You folks are all making accusations that you cannot say for certain are actually true.

The only thing you know for sure is the seller listed some stuff on eBay - then cancelled the auction because they told you half the stuff had been given away accidentally.

You know, if that IS true, then there's nothing to really debate, it was just an honest mistake.

But you're all assuming the seller is lying and won't sell because the end price was too low and is, subsequently, scum (or similar) But there's nothing to actually validate your reasoning... I mean nothing - at all.

    Excuse the interruption, please continue.

Honest mistake or not, its still negative feedback. You bidded for an item, you didnt get the item, not a positive ebay experience.

Its the sellers responsibility to actually have the item they are selling. If they are selling something they do not have, its a negative feedback - honest mistake or not, its up to the seller to take the consequences of their mistake.

What are you going to do, leave positive? "A++ DIDNT GET ITEM, WILL GET TIME WASTED AGAIN"

I hadn't paid as normally with pick up items I'm happy to just pay cash on collection, so there was no hassle there.

To be honest I think it was an honest mistake, as looking at the other items for sale it's "oldies" stuff so I'm thinking they put the console stuff up on behalf of a son who then claimed it/passed it on without letting the seller on. In fact there was simply a picture and not much of a description as they said they didn't know much about it.

Yes there was time wasted but I think a negative is a bit harsh as there wasn't any real damage done, other than not getting the stuff of course. This person doesn't have any seller feedback, and their message was apologetic. If they were being an asshole then I'd certainly leave a negative. I think in this case I'll just leave a neutral and explain why.

tbh I think you should not have agreed to cancel then the seller would have had to go through resolution side of it and then would have gotten a strike across his user name

that's far better than neg feedback, 9 out of 10 people don't even look at feedback when buying (unless your buying from China LOL)

    LOL.

Bad is right, negative is correct. If I watched the item for 7 days, battling with people to get the item at a certain price and pay. Then get a message about "sorry item was not instock" I'd be pissed off, also some sellers take weeks to refund you. I would be leaving a negative too. Couldn't care less if I hurt their feedback score. They should know what they have, or don't list it at all and this is what happens when you cut corners.

I had the exact same thing happen with some DEV PS1 kit I was bidding on. I won it extra low, like $150, and the seller wanted to cancel the auction after it sold. Said it was non functional or some crap like that. I told him I wanted it and he persisted...

Honestly, if you agreed to the cancellation then it wouldn't be very wise to leave negative feedback because the seller can have ebay remove it.

ebay wont remove feedback unless its threatening or bad language. at the end of the day as bad_ad said feedback denotes a buyers experience and even though the buyer agreed the buyer had a foul taste left in his mouth and that is something that should be portrayed in feedback
