Got a NTSC-US N64 from eBay model number, NUS-001 (USA). I was going to RGB mod this console, but apon opening the console up notice it had been modded already. But i dont think the 3 wires are soldered to the correct pads on the PCB...

The wires are soldered to C124, C125 and C126 but looking at all the mods on varies websites it looks like the wires should be soldered to R8, R9, R10....

    Any ideas on this mod?

Just resolder them. You have half of the work done for you :smile-new:

Isn't it the same thing? each resistor is connected to each capacitor anyway and it's a lot easier to solder to the ends of the caps than it is to the ends of the smaller resistors.

As kel said, its the same thing.
I solder to the caps too, just like your picture shows.

Ok cool so no need to change it then?

I have noticed that there are no resistors attached to the wires carried out in this mod should there really be resistors fitted or do I only need to add them if the picture is too dark?

If the picture is to dark you build an amplifier. If it's to bright you solder in resistors.

What causes the picture to become dark?, does it depend on the model version on the n64?

Id suggest taking a picture of the full mod, rather than just the cap solder points

The wires just go to the R,G and B pads on the underside of the video input, doesnt go to the chip like some of the other mods

Its just picture preference like someone else said. The chip is just an amp.

    You need the amp.

But its possible someones done the "internal amp mod" - which is actually going to cause damage to the machine.

If the latter has been done, it needs reversing and a amp fitted. If not, just needs an amp.

Ok have looked on the mmonkey website at the n64 internal Amp mod but can't bake out the picture as it had an 'x'over it now as its suggested not to do this mod. What actually does this mod consist of just bridging 2 points with solder?

So i opened up the scart lead that i got with this N64 from ebay and noticed a mod inside the scart head itself...

I was getting a kind of patch work square effect over the entire screen (is this whats know as the X pattern display problem?) so i took the scart lead apart and found this small pcb inside, i take it thats a amp mod? Thing is when playing doom the display is really dark. Am i best doing the internal amp mod and using a standard SNES scart lead?

Normally shouldn't matter. Some picky devices need one or the other.

Well, when you cut the trace to pin 9, you will will o nly get B&W on regular AV cables. If you dont plan on using the N64 on any other TV, no big deal. You can, however, solder a switch on the cut trace so that you can enable as needed.

Ok I'll be doing the internal amp mod using the THS7314 chip and using a standard raw sync snes Scart cable, can I use the same solder points as used in the mod currently applied to my n64 (see pic in first post)?, as the guide on mmmonkeys website has him soldering to the actual legs of the chip on the n64 pcb, I've always though it bad practice to solder to chip legs and try and avoid it whenever you can, and the way mine is currently modded looks to be a much easier way!. Is there any differences or advantages to either of these 2 RGB mod method?
