I'm one of the previous buyers, just looking at the discs I noticed that they have only recorded the track readable by PC and audio CD Player and not the track with the game data readable by Dreamcast so they are totally defective or fake. Of the 4 discs I received none of them works (tried with System Disc 2, swap trick to verify them totally). Another buyer with a Rez disc can't get it to work either.

Is dissapointing too because other buyers like Dreamcasthistory and myself bought from InsertGame some GD-Rs long time ago with no problems. Even my System Disc 2 is from them. I hope Funkstar De Luxe can explain what happens with these discs and why is selling them.

With so many dev systems and blank disc's in the wild it was only a matter of time that someone produced protos on demand. This seller might have fucked up on burning them but others won't. That is a shame because unless the game has never been seen or it's an unknown revision Dreamcast GDr's are going to end up being worth no more then bootlegs.

BuyAtari the name of one of the owners of InsertGame.co.uk is Callum and the address is from Kilbirnie, Ayrshire (UK).

Yes A. Snow probably it was only a matter of time that someone decided to make fake protos to obtain a benefit. Is very sad, because people will have to go with a lot of care to avoid things like this.

Funkstar gone crooked? I thought he was alright...

Mind you though, the temptation... I I have loads of PS1 CDR's and thought about how easy it would be to burn something to them, take a wire brush to them to age it, and stick them on ebay to make a killing. I wouldn't do it as I know how pissed off I would be shelling out for something rare only to find it was a fake. But it can be done, and it's hard to (dis)prove them as being both real or fake (except for the semi blank GDR's, but they could be genuine mis-burns, but then you wouldn't label mis-burns...)

You also wouldn't mail out a failed burn to a magazine to review it! Of course each GD-R would have been tested before being mailed for review.

Yeah that's what I meant when I said you wouldn't even bother to label them, let alone send them out... mind you a "defunct magazine publisher" could be anyone, I could publish a magazine to myself, but give up, technically I am then a "defunct magazine publisher" so it's all how you say it. I could then sell my PS1 CDR's and say legally they were from a "defunct magaine publisher" even though the disks were themselves illegal.

Anyway, this is getting a bit O/T

Yes, and you wouldn't label mis-burns with the words "Tested OK" as is written in the Skies of Arcadia discs. :(

You had luck to forget about the auctions then. I saw other members of Assembler bidding on them. I wrote an email to the winner of the Rez disc, he left good feedback, he did not know that it is possible to run GD-Rs on a common DC without System Disc 2 so he did no tried the disc with the swap trick until I gave him the link at the Wombat site with the method.

    Hello

I bought a GDR too from another seller on Ebay, I tried to boot it with my system disc 2 and nothing happened, my dreamcast rebooted once I inserted the GD-R then it came back to the main bios screen.

Anyway I just checked the seller's items a few items and she seems to have an awful lot of Quake 3 GD-Rs one last week on this week !!! The seller is ratruby.

Tachikoma I told you I knew how to boot GDRs last week. Well System Disc 2 was the only I knew and really believed it would work. He guess who look like an idiot now ???

Would you mind explaining me the swap trick??? I assume GDRs are region lock and mine is US and my DC is japanese does that count at all?

    Many thanks

    Sabre

I cannot speak to any GD-Rs on eBay (or elsewhere) but I can confirm that it IS very much possible to have a region coded GD-R. The System Disc 2 will only remove the copy protection lock, allowing the GD-R media to be read. A US coded GD-R will not boot in a JPN or PAL coded DC and vice versa if you are only using the SD2.

Yeah LeGIt's right, I have a Death Crimson 2 GDR that is Japanese, and will not run on my PAL DC no matter how hard I try. I just need to get a Jpn DC from somewhere.
