I don't like Xbox Live. Not so much because of the price, but because of principle. They have the gall to charge people (however small the amount may be) AND load the service with ads? No Microsoft, one or the other. If we have to pay to maintain the servers, then what the hell are the ads for? More money in your already giant pockets? If PSN is full of ads (which from what I remember, it's not) then that's perfectly fine, the service is free after all. Xbox Live has no free alternative since you can't actually play online with a silver account. Live wasn't always full of ads, but it got worse and worse with each unnecessary dashboard update. It's bullshit. I don't play online anyway, but that always bugged me about Xbox Live.
I've owned/repaired/sold 8-9 360s... I will not use one myself. How unreliable are the early ps3s? Are they like the 360s that will fail, or is it mostly after the fans get packed with crap and they overheat? I am a PC gamer. I want something that I can play 5-6hrs a week when I don't want to play PC games. And for GT...
My 60GB PS3 has not had any issues whatsoever. Then again, I hardly ever play it anymore. To be perfectly honest with you, you should probably just get the the new slim model. I saved up and went out of my way to acquire the 60GB model for full backwards compatibility and Linux. The backwards compatibility is neat, but it looks like ass on an HDTV. Widescreen games don't fill up the entire screen and you risk burn in if you play the games in 4:3. Plus you could still play PS1 games anyway even on the slim model. As for Linux, I'm not even going to go there.
I never said anything different from that. GT5 had a slow and terrible development, lots of design changes and pathetic use of licenses. In the end, we got a unfinished product that had be constantly fixed. Also i don't understand why adding new features if they are not finished. Track Creator with shallow features, Kart racing with lack of variety and the worst A-Spec mode ever. The WRC license really lacks tracks from GT3 and GT4 like Grand Canyon, Tahiti Maze, Swiss Alps,... The Top Gear license has a race of VW Van for crying out lod! Wonder what Clarkson thinks about that. The game truly shines on the track though. Racing on Nurburgring or Le Mans with day-to-night cycles is just incredible. Also had some great times with online races and seasonal events. I just think Kazunori and his team need focus. Spending time doing cars like Kubelwagen or the VW Van, instead of a car people will actually want to drive it's just stupid. Trying to push the limits of the system is one thing, making the game almost impossible to run on the system is just insane. Why bothering making the game to run on a fake 1080p if it keeps tearing like hell? Same here. I prefer using my WDTV Live for streaming services. Back on the subject, if i were you i would get that PS3 model with 1 year of PlayStation Plus membership.
Yeah, the driving is fine, too bad everything surrounding it is such utter shit. Somehow I didn't mention probably the worst menu system ever made. But hey, PD are a very eco-conscious development team, after all, 80% of GT5 is recycled content!
Problem is, that comparison makes everything feel pretty fucking insignificant. I don't wanna start a flame war, but I personally don't like the XBOX LIVE scheme thing and you're as much entitled to your opinion than I. I wouldn't pay 3k$ a year to ride the car I paid 20k$, wouldn't I? Same goes for me about xbox live, beside they don't even need it to make ridiculous amount of money. As for ps3, I got a late slim 320gb model that was on same right after the security flaw was found, came with pre-3.55FW and I'm pretty happy with it. Relatively small, doesn't make too much noise, plenty of hdd space and CFW working well. Keep in mind you can put pretty swap the HDD for any 2.5" sata hdd ~500gb or less so the HDD size shouldn't really be a factor in your decision. FG
Not really, I mean if you buy any games or any other entertainment-related things that's gonna add up to a much more significant number than that. I mean, €3.4 is what, a couple of bags of candy?
A word of advice for everyone on the original FAT PS3's 60gb 1) Open the machine and replace the thermal paste. IF you are especially skilled you can pop the IHS off and replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the IHS. This makes a HUGE difference 2) Clean the dust inside 3) Replace the PSU with an APS-226 one. Cooler and more efficient to the ZSSR5391A 4) Put an SSD (SATA1 - SATA2 at the most) in. Cheapest one you can find. It does help with most of the games. Not a great lot but with GT5 and some other games that read a lot of the hard drive it does
I think we've both made our point. Yes, but only if you embrace the dark side, or buy games on psn. "Dark side" + online play isn't a good mix though.
I didn't realize you could replace the PSU. That's pretty awesome. I'm going to try to do a fix of my old PS3 one of these days (tried replacing the thermal paste but it didn't help; I'll need to do the whole reflow process as well) and I may as well integrate that into the unit just in case. Where's the best place to pick one up? Re Reliability for Whitrzac - Unless you take the steps mentioned by Daytime Dreamer, a 20/60 is highly, highly likely to fail at this point during regular usage. It's a latent issue with the earlier models that crops up over time but by all accounts, it's just as prevalent as the RROD on early model 360s. Mine lasted almost six years of regular usage, so I'm not too bummed about it dying so much as I'm bummed that I didn't have my virtual memory cards backed up. Woops. The system had a few other minor issues over the last few years that kind of tipped me off that something was wrong, such as not being able to play God of War 3 (it would reliably freeze midway into one of the earlier levels) and having a few hard locking issues with a couple of games in the last year or two. Rare, but notable occurrences. If you get an older model that you don't plan on taking online and that can run a guest OS, you can have a self booting version of Linux on a thumb drive preloaded to boot a custom build of MAME for some awesome arcade fun. Don't remember playing with any other emus on it, but that one worked well enough. The lack of linux now a days isn't a huge dealbreaker since I also have an HTPC, but at the time it was a nice feature. More bummed at the lack of native PS2 support. One drawback to the PS2 support on the original models was that outputting over HDMI induced a small bit of latency vs outputting over composite/svideo/component. It looked really nice and clean, but for games that required a high level of precision, you'd have to adjust to the...I think two or three frame latency (1/20th or 1/30th of a second IIRC) in addition to whatever your TV added depending on post processing effects turned on. Not a huge issue for most games and the filtering cleaned things up a bit (not a huge amount, but a bit). Thankfully there's been a nice push to those HD rereleases and the PSN store is slowly adding more PS2 games, so as long as you don't mind paying a small premium to reacquire games, you'll still be able to play a lot of the goodies. except Warship Gunner 2, which will never get the HD port it deserves. That game is awesome. Ace Combat with ships in an alternate World War II where you're the bad guys...and then you fight alien ships. It's so awesome.
My suggestion.... Get the Phat PS2 39001 series (Best version ever, before the crappy and cost saving 50001 version), then get the Network adapter and a IDE hard disk and run games from there, to preserve your laser. Then get the CECH-3001 PS3 Slim (Not the crappy cost saving 4001 super slim model) to play your PS1 and PS3 games.... GT5 is fun to play with the latest patch. Period.
Main stream new releases are $99/$108 usually... Family Guy hit the nail on the head with what I was saying though. I had an XBOX Live trial and got banned from a few games, with reasons I'm not aware of. It's honestly the most annoying paid for service, and it's just a huge turn off for me.
I owned a Phat PS3 40GB model since 2008, upgraded the hard drive to 320GB in 2010 and it recently died (Yellow light of Death) It was a solid console, but the black pastic was a dust/finger print/scratch magnet, thats the only thing that bothered me. I wouldn't want another one though as the YLOD problem has put me off them for life. I took delivery of a new 'Super Slim' PS3 on Tuesday, i have to say, despite what people have moaned about online, the build quality is very nice i was impressed! Unfortunately, mine has a defective Heatsink/Fan/Thermostat as the Fan revs up to 100% as soon as you start a game, it's louder than your average hoover! I have been reading online, a few people have had the same problem and returned thier consoles for replacements and they have been fine since. Must have just been a bad batch from Sony, i wouldn't let it put you off. The drive is slightly louder than previous models, but it's not a problem.
So Xbox Live is bad because of reasons that have nothing to do with XBL itself, but rather its users? That makes less sense than anything else ever.
I had two Phats and they both had unreliable disk drives, I now have had the first Slim model for years now so I doubt it will let you down. However I like how today if a console can last 4-5 years then it's considered reliable, when compared to my Sega Master System which has seen two decades of use with no problems. So what will the next generation of consoles be like? if your PS4 makes it through it's first month then it has proven its reliability...? Talking about GT5, it's the first Gran Turismo I have played where I played the arcade mode more than the simulation mode, it's a beautiful looking game if you stick to the premium cars, especially on night tracks.
