I got myself a Transferer 2 + 32M Flash Cart for the original Game Boy, mainly for LSDJ. Flashed it with the file (most recent one) and... it won't play on my Game Boy Pocket. ;(

The GBP plays official carts just fine but with the flash cart nothing happens. Not even a black bar coming down on startup (as it would with no cart plugged in). The screen just stays blank.

The LSDJ wiki mentions that a GBP drains a flash cart's SRAM battery faster than other GB versions and the 8bc wiki says that it's known for "power problems" but that's the only piece of info on that issue.

By the way, the cart works just fine on my Gamecube Game Boy Player and I also dumped the copied file and verified the checksum.

    Any ideas?

this is a hardware side effect, you wont be able to use it, I assume based on what you have mentioned, on the GBP. lovely piece of kit that btw, my favourite GB!

I'm wondering, did you pick up the Transferer 2 in Japan?

I got everything directly from EMS in Hong Kong. Good service and it took only a couple of days with normal airmail to Japan.

Update: now tried two 32M carts on both a Super Game Boy 2 and an original Game Boy (DMG). SGB works fine with both carts, GB doesn't with either.

So, given that the carts run on an SGB2 and the GC Game Boy Player but not on GB or GBP, is it really just an alimentation problem? I'll see what EMS has to say about it.

Did you try throwing it in an original cartridge case? If the board's the same dimensions that is. So you have two of the things now? Let me know if you want to get rid of one.

You mean my Game Boys are discriminating against clear purple cartridges. Bastards!

if you're using the Gameboy for LSDJ, most artists prefer the original grey Gameboys over the other models. better sounds, longer battery life, etc. not to much they're drop dead sexay! :p

Yeah, I've been reading alot there is out there regarding LSDJ including the great sound comparison by Herbert Weixelbaum (link). I actually just bought a fat Game Boy (they come not only in grey - mine's transparent) for that and I would love to use it if only I could...

great article right there. when i've used lsdj on my gb pocket, i get a constant hum. i'm not really sure how to fix it but it's super annoying. there's no hum with normal gb carts.

Such a weird problem and I was about to give up on the cards but then I found a solution today.

After some trial and error I covered pin 30 (third from the right) on the cart with adhesive tape and... ta-da... it worked! Very excited and relieved about it. Actually both cards work now with this fix.

According to this site (link), pin 30 is "/RESET" and goes to the MBC (Memory Bank Controller). Can anyone explain that and the possible problem that occurred here?

Now I can use the cards on the DMG-01 without any problems (or so it seems).

If /RESET's held low, the MBC can't necessarily do it's job because /RESET typically asychronously sets flip-flop bits to a desired initial state. Since MBC have a fixed bank this probably shouldn't stop games from working. /RESET also is used to decode RAM in order to keep things from accidentally getting overwritten during reset while the CPU is in a wacky state, sometimes ROM uses it too. If the GB's /RESET was actually bad though, I'd think the GB wouldn't start either since it's probably the same line used by the CPU. It's possible that the GB just can't drive the flashcart MBC's input high on the bus.

And how exactly is that useless? It allows you to dump a commercial game onto a flash cartridge. I'm sure many people who'd like to keep backups of their own cartridges would find it useful.

EMS stuff is not bad at all. Their Game Boy Smart Cards are by far the cheapest alternative around. I'm not sure what went wrong with cez's unit, but these things should work right away. I've got an EMS cartridge and it works perfect on the DMG, Color and GBA. Haven't tested it with Pocket, Light, or Super Game Boy, but it would work fine there, too. Must have been bad luck.
