why not check out a few reviews over at Gamefaqs. They seems to like it quite a lot. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/review/928678.html Yakumo
I give it a HUGE thumbs up. This is the game that made me love my 360. However I must say that it is the kind of game where they could easily mess up the translation. The characters are based on very Japanese stereotypes with the voices to match. I have a strong feeling that this might not work well with whiny americans doing the acting. So please do not blame me if the European version is as shocking as say FFX international was. But back to the game. I think that there are parts of the graphics, parts of the music and some segments of the game that are really 5 star stuff. It just does not feel as polished as it could be. Also the main story is far too easy. I reckon it was rushed far too much. Also it could have been on two discs. Apprently they had to scrap a bunch of HD video as it would not fit on a single disc and they were in somewhat of a rush. This becomes very evident when you realize that the final dungeon is a mere 5 minutes long and shorter than the very first dungeon! I can only hope that when the release it for the PS3 they will have polished up some of the shorter dungeons at the end of the game. So in brief. The game is clearly rushed and this becomes more evident the further you get. The music is wonderful - I was actually listining to it at the gym yesterday. Graphics are lovely, but lack polish. Characters are stereotypes but rather endearing. Oh and it has one of the best secret dungeons in game history, I loved it anyway, I real challenge right to the end. (although Yuki's sniper shot skill hurts the "Omega Weapon" of the game a little too much.) I would buy it. But I have a feeling they may have cocked up the translation. Or you could wait for the PS3 version as they are bound to polish it up a bit and they will probably include the HD movies and content that would not fit on a single 360 disc. EDIT - just read some Gamefaqs reviews and it seems like you can have the Japanese voices instead of the English. Wonderful stuff, though I cannot vouch for the quality of the subs. I have no idea how they could effectively translate the Homoerotic overtones of some moments of the game...
Rent it. I was able to get 85% done before I turned it in, and I didn't even play it for 2 of the rental days. Heard there was barely any side quests either, and there is no achievements besides the main story.
Well yes the achievements are rather dull. However there are quite a few side quests - Firstly there is the massive task of getting all the golem. I still do not have them all yet and that is because I still have not been to every area in the secret dungeon - it really is that big. You have the 3 god-like sub-bosses to defeat to get some secret weapons You have 4 elemental mini-dungeons with tough bosses to finish off. You then have the last secret dungeon - this one is massive. It also gives you your final weapons and strongest golems. Then the toughest boss is to be found on the very last floor. BTW nearly all bosses in these sub quests become playable when you beat them - so that was a huge incentive for me. Finally there is a casino to mess about with. Once done with all that you can level up your favourite golem and fight them pokemon-style on live.
