If anyone wants a Retrode or its accessories, jump on that quickly as they are not being produced anymore (though support will continue). http://www.retrode.org/2014/03/thats-all-folks-2/
It mat have been useless for most things but it did shine in a few areas. It can dump games that haven't been dumped yet like beta carts and such. It can also read and write to games that have a save function built in. Playing Sonic 3 on the emulator but want to finish on the console? Just move the save file to the cart SRAM. While a smaller thing that you can find for cheap all over the net it can also allow for original controls to be used. That's all the good things I can think of. Nothing more unless you're the type who "likes to plug big carts into laptops and small smartphones for the lulz".
The dumping part was interesting indeed, the other part not so much. It's a shame though that he has to cease production of them.
One thing that made it better was the built in Genesis and SNES controller ports. So with one device you can add 4 controllers, plus dump carts if you want to. It's still a bit strange though as 99% of people probably don't need to dump any carts at all. Maybe some might use the Save Backup/Write function though. Too bad that it isn't being produced now. But it sounds like if there ends up being enough demand it's not like no one will make them ever again.
