Could anybody please tell me if there is a difference between a 27c801 and a m27c801 eprom or are they just the same?
The difference is usually the manufacturer. They should be pretty much identical, when it comes to reading/writing.
I agree with drx, you shouldn't have any problems swapping a 27c801 with a m27c801. Btw, 27c801 is quite a big 8bit eprom, may I ask what your building? /frax
Indeed. By the way, if in doubt, search for a datasheet. Try googling: 27c801 datasheet and.... yeah, you get the idea!
BTW, if you are using this on speed-reliant hardware, say EPROM carts, you should try getting the fastest one. Also, I've been looking through old Sega docs and one Genesis technical bulletin recommended that you don't mix JEDEC and non-JEDEC eproms.
Thanks, so could I use 27c801 ones even if the specification of my eprom programmer says its intended for m27c801 read/write not mentioning 27c801? My intention is to build my own devcart for the SNES and maybe a German translation of Seiken Dentsu 3 on a cart, too. I already bought 2 hirom carts with 8kb sram at a local fleamarket and got my eprom programmer ready, but I'm missing the most important parts - the eproms.
Good luck fitting 4 roms in the cartridge casing. I know it can be done but it doesn't look like fun. And remember your EPROMs should be 120ns or faster for SNES's FastROM setting.
I'm planning to do it like this I hope it will fit into a PAL case And for the devcart I'll just attach another board on top with some sockets on it.
That would be really nice, but I think those pins are just too small for my poor soldering skills :-(
Then you may have to cut the case or not use one at all - especially if you socket the EPROMs (which would be advisable if your soldering isn't superb).
