I fancy having a go at some of the switch less mods for the MD/Saturn etc. I've seen that you need an eprom programmer to flash the chip and was wondering if this would be suitable?

Any idea if this one would be suitable?

    Good question.

Also, Is it as easy as flashing an Eprom with a .gen rom and soldering it into a pre existing cart replacing the existing rom?

if so, sign me up. I would like to start a repro collection but most places charge too much for a rom hack or fan/translation.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

Someone here earlier in the month got a Wily Wars repro burned to an EPROM he soldered into a cart himself. He found out that it couldn't keep his saved games on the cart. Seems Wily Wars uses a different variety of IC for saving (serial something or other) and the donor cart he used was SRAM? There is a patch to fix that and presumably it was applied before the EPROM was burnt.

Now if you look at fan translations made into a professional cart for the SNES those ARE a pain in the ass as the mask rom has a smaller footprint than the EPROMs they are pin compatible with. Lots of fine soldering work that takes a lot of experience and some flux to properly work with. Star Fox 2 presents it's own challenges.

Now as for the switchless Saturn mod you actually are using a PIC not an EPROM. That Willem programmer should handle the PIC just fine but you'll want to check its list of supported PICs just to be 100% sure. The JDM programmer as it is known is extremely easy to build and very cheap but it doesn't support much beyond PICs and a handful of EPROMs when an adapter is built.

Why use a PIC chip for the MD mod? It like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. If you want to do a MD switchless mod you can use a 74HC74 chip which is going to be cheaper, easier and a lot less hassle then using a PIC chip.

The Saturn one has more bells and whistles, although the upgraded one that uses a EPROM as well so you can get a Japanese startup screen rather then the US / UK one when in the right region does sound like overkill for no good reason. Although a lot of people only need two regions on a Saturn (generally US/Jap, Europe/Jap) and this can be done with a simple 74HC157 chip.
