I just read this on lik-sang:

Because of the huge shortage, it is impossible to know for anyone (including Lik Sang and retailers in Japan) when and how many units Sony will make available in the following weeks. Not all import gamers worldwide will be able to get their unit from the first batch, and those few lucky ones who must and can receive theirs at launch need to get used to launch prices - which is by now US$ 450 to US$ 600 for a Value Pack and game

$450-600 for a PSP value pack and one bloody game that's just plain insaine.

Also it seems sony is making a loos of $200-250 on every PSP sold, sounds like microsoft tactics to me.

So my question is would you buy the PSP at this price ?

Yeah, I got the email (i preordered, but 99% im not gonna go through with it at THAT price!)

Its supply and demand, they got the supply, and theres a demand

They could charge $1000 a unit, and people will STILL pay all day

Now give it 1-2 months, it will drop down... I personally wouldnt pay at all.. too rich for me, and im broke right now too..so all the more reason not to spend!

/me patiently awaits the USA release!

Too bad PAL users will probably get screwed like usual :(

I think Sony is really going to get hammerred in the ass with the PSP.

Please, please, buy a DS+all 6 launch games and don't let those dirty bastards at Lik-Sang or eBay or Play-Asia try to get you to buy one for $600. I'm definately interested in buying one, but not at that price! Christ, buy all the next gen systems, including a DS, and you'll have $50 left over! :smt042

I figured this would happen. Sony has a horrible time with producing consoles, and this is no different. Hell, look at the previous two Sony launches, both the PS2 and the mini-PS2 were hard as hell to find (don't remember if the first playstation having problems, but I bet it did)

Yeah, I think I also have a great chance to be able to get one from Lik-Sang (pre-ordered in September), but $450 (or even more, Lik-Sang is talking about a 450 to 600 $ range) is way out my league. I mean, come on!, that's like twice the price Sony announced a few weeks ago.

I think I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if the price goes down a bit, otherwise I don't import a PSP at all and will wait for the European release...

$450 bones for a game system? No way. Give it a year and it'll drop to a competitve price, then I'll pick one up (plus more games will be out for it.)

Yeah, the Ps2 launch was screwy also, but once Sony gets going they usually have little problem meeting demand. I can wait a year.

    PAYSTATION PORTABLE

Hey just found a new signification to PSP,

    PayStation Portable !!!

No way would I pay $450-$1000 for a Sony Console no way :smt082

Everytime with Sony it is the same, we can only produce a few consoles and bla bla. I think as business it is doesn't sound professional at all. The machines look sweet but wait for the first breakdowns hehe.

Get a DS it is much better value for money!!! I'm getting to try it tomorrow one of my mate bought one. Let's hope DHL will be on time. :prayer:

Meh, screw you guys. I'm on one as soon as they come out. $250 is probably the biggest loss on a console to date. Good sign.

You guys need to get a grip on reality here.

$450 is NOT THE MSRP SET BY SONY. The MSRP is approx. $185 US which is not much more than the DS and extremely reasonable.

Bloody hell, enough of this lame-ass "I'm with Ninty and I is hates dah SONY cuz I am dah hardcore with mah DS' so I'm-a-bash-dah-PSP!!!! Fucking hell people.

AS LIK-SANG HAS *SAID* THEY HAVE BOUGHT THEIR UNITS FROM SCALPING SELLERS IN JAPAN AT PREMIUM PRICES and so are passing on the cost. Same shit happened with the PS2. Hell, it even happened with the DC. Shops in the UK like Another World were selling import DCs with one game for 1000.00 pounds. Didn't see any of the pseudo-hardcore whining then that SEGA was ripping people off, 'I hope the DC dies', ' Please go buy an N64 with all 6 launch games ( 4 of which are shit ports in the case of the DS)' bullshit.

I never thought I would ever be defending a SONY console after what their hype did to the DC and SEGA in the hardware market, but I am SO fucking SICK of this peudo-hardcore pro-Nintendo-at-any-cost bullshiznit. People ohh and ahhh over every little gimmick in the DS, ignoring its weaknesses utterly ( ugly ass design, weight, weka as fuck launch lineup besides mario and Feel the Magic, very-likely-to-be-underused-second screen a la VMU. GBA-GC cable and XBOX/Ps2 HDD) ) , and when it comes to the PSP, extrapolate on every bloody potential 'weakness' they see even if they have to make it up ('the PSP's gonna have a shit library of only psone and ps2 ports! i can see the future! and neve rmind that the GBA's library is clogged to hell with NES and SNES ports, they're Nintendo so that's OK!! ).

And this shit isn't even coming from casual gamers or even junior high school fools, but wonder of wonders - the so-called 'It's-Only-About-the-Games' pseudo-hardcore - when these self-proclaimed 'gamers' ( cough - more like fanboys to the nth degree) should be fucking glad as fuck that SONY is entering the portable market. If SONY hadn't invaded the home market we never would have seen much of what we have in terms of gaming milestones. They shook the market up, reinvented it for the better than Nintendo had lead it before and Nintendo woke up and realized it was a dinosaur. They can do the same and reinvent and re-pace the development of the handheld market and bring things to the table that Nintendo just won't or can't. Anyone really caring 'about just the games' would welcome this.

But no, these so-called gamers instead act as if they are Iwata's nutsacks and don't want ANYONE to touch what has regrettably been mostly Nintendo turf. What are these people, Nintendo-loving Communists?

I'm so sick of all this DS ohh-ing and ahhh-ing and PSP-bashing that despite having my own DS and being happy with it, I'm tempted to counter all this bullshit by bashing the f** out of the DS and hoping Nintendo's fucking fossilized, molasses-paced fucking monopoly on the market is smashed to fucking hell.

Come to think of it, I do hope that Sony breaks Nintendo's fucking fossilized, molasses-paced fucking monopoly on the market and reduces them to a much smaller hold on it. Nintendo needed a rude awakening in 1996 and it fucking needs it now.

    Hey

id-republix is right. The retail price of the PSP isn't really ok and if those shops pass on the costs, then its their prices which ruin all the fun. On the other hand, SONY can't handle the demand, which is quit sad. Why make the nice handheld console around christmas time and not meet the demand. Thats a big minus point for them.

    Read here about it:

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/news.php?aid=5680

IMO they should have produced more. Why focus on the PStwo? The problem is, that it is released pretty "late" in Dec. If they would have lauched it at the same time as the DS, they could have sold a lot. Look at it this way: If the console is released in the middle of Dec. how sure can you be to recieve it in time for christmas. There is no way SONY can meet the demand with that time table...

For that retail price it would be a great gift, but for the relase date being so late and prices being HIGH, people would rather buy a DS, which they WILL recieve in time.

To sum all up, sony did a nice job on the PSP, but really messed all up with their marketing strageties and release stragety.

    LATEST UPDATE:

Just got a confirmation e-mail from Lik-Sang stating the price for a pre-order unit will be $529. In one word: unbelievable :angry !!! I'm not going to import one at all after hearing this, those people at Lik-Sang can screw themselves...

Why are they taking advantage of the situation? Do they really think this is going to result in some more $?? They're not making themselves popular in this way. On the long run they will even lose money by people who are not going to buy any more stuff of them, all because of this. I've read a lot of angry posts after Lik-Sang brought out the news this morning. But of course they're not the only ones, Play-Asia for example is asking almost the same price for an unit. BTW, those 529 dollars are even without a game (an additional 60 bucks)!
