My megacd2 is till working like a charm and that's about 7-8 years old, so i think a dreamcast would last longer.

Ironically enough, just this weekend my DC started acting up on me.
I put in my boot disc to play some Shenmue (import) on my US DC system and suddenly it stopped reading discs. Mind you, the system powered up and let me do the normal things like check my VMU, etc, but the GDROM unit or motor was not working at all.

So, I opened the system and did a quick examination. Nothing looked wrong, so I simply disconnected the orange ribbon cable from the GDROM laser assembly (it sort of just slides out) and reseated it. Put the DC together and fired it up. Lo and behold, it works! Is this ribbon cable issue a common problem as well?

If you really want to preserve something, they have a system that will put the items you have bagged in a 100% carbon dioxide environment. No more oxygen = no more corrosion or minimal.

some things like the capacitors will dry out

pong units still work well if you're looking for an indication of lifespan.

50 year old televisions work as well.

some normal maintenance will be needed.

In a dc, I would say for lon long term storage, best to remove the battery to prevent leakage.

Well, my house is surrounded by 90% oxygen, 10% other shit emmited from all the trucks. Very little carbon dioxide, besides what me and my better half breath out.

Points well taken though. I am looking for a good way to store my STARS DC, as I don't plan on selling it, and I want it to hold its value.

    GaijinPunch,

how about buying one of those camera cabinets that you see around the hi-tech shops in Japan. Those things are meant to keep out everything from dust to humidity.

I think I can persuade the missus, if it doesn't take up too much space. Also gotta make sure the movers don't play kick the package with it. I assume my stuff will come with insurance, but WTF knows these days.

Vaccum seal it and you'll kill the caps and probably rupture the
    heat pipe.

You don't want to just shove it in plastic, the vapor build up is bad.

The paper the box is made of is not acid free probably and will rot away in a century anyway.

    I hope I have bigger problems than a $1000 console in a century. :D

One of the things that the china dc is better than the jap one is that it has a quieter and stronger fan. have you ever turn on a vacuum and hold the pipe at the fan vent on the dc? It goes at sonic speed. One day I did that with the DC open, and my finger acidentally touched the fan, it cut some flesh of my finger, and the fan blade got broken a bit. Now the fan is loud and has some strange noise. Is the samsung drive better or the yamaha drive, in terms of reliability and lens quality. I know the yamaha tracking motor is much quieter. Will the cooling system on the jap dc keep the dc a longer life or make it shorter with regular use?

I'd recommend you to change that fan. A broken fan blade can produce vibration and damage what it is attached to. Not to mention the noise.

I would recommend not sticking your fingers in a moving fan.
