I remember some news about a Saturn version of EternalChampions. I never thought that the Mega Cd or Mega Drive games were much though. My brother would play them a lot but they looked very "Mortal Kobatish" for me. I don't mean the style of the graphics but the whole feel of the game.

It was supposed to come out for the Saturn during Xmas 95 (Saturn's first US Xmas). But then Virtua Fighter 2 came along, and Sega did not want to have 2 fighting games competing against each other during the holiday season.

Virtua Fighter 2 got the priority, so it came out in Xmas 95 while Eternal Champion was pushed back to some time 1996. That was the last time Sega mentioned Eternal Champion for Saturn ever again. By the way, I still have that very first Saturn box with the Eternal Champion pic at the side of the box :smt023

Imagine what could be done to Virtua Fighter 2 if EC came out in Xmas 95 and VF2 was pushed back instead. Yu Suzuki said the game was rushed to make the holiday 95 deadline (and I remember the game came out on December 10th...that's VERY close and late for a holiday release). I saw pics in early development that Shun Di's stage was on a floating platform, just like the arcade version. But in the final Saturn version we got a lame stationary platform with the river in the background. Yu himself said that the arcade Shun Di stage could be duplicated on the Saturn if his team was given more time...
