Yeah, my dad's told me that story a few times, too (he's from the US, before anybody explodes). I used to call BS, were it not for hearing it more often these days - for instance, the National Streetcar Scandal or what's its name. But, if there used to be a "European-style" system of public transportation, there's no question whether the nature of America renders it "impossible", is there? Who knows, with gas prices continually climbing, pollution and traffic congestion it might eventually return.
in the u.s. ethanol would make more sense if it was made from hemp, instead of corn...which by using produces less ethanol and drives up the cost of food.
BUT HEMP IS MADE OF THE DEVIL WEED:katamari: Hemp makes a lot more sense for a ton of different industries, but of course it will never happen because these industries would say, "Hey, wait, where did all of our nasty, ill-gotten money go?"
Ethanol polutes just as much (if not more) than petrol. But biodiesel is probably the most "non poluting" fuel. So whether the diesel engine still sounds like a tractor (and runs slower) , then it is better for the envirioment if you use biodiesel. Which is made of fishoil, cooking oil, and other vegetable oils. That has been "precooked" in a deep frier.
Or try to find the episode of dirty jobs where you see. Him being right next to a guy that makes bio diesel, then you have the recipee for bio diesel.
Running a car on Veggie oil is Far simpler then making bio diesel. Even just buying Bio-Diesel is a pain as it costs more normal diesel. Its also cleaner for the environment.
