http://ps2.ign.com/articles/802/802262p1.html Apparently a new version PS2 is out with even more part reductions. I wonder if it will hit the $75-80 price point?
Couldn't find any better pictures yet (not even 100% sure this is it, but a german site claims it) Hope they do something like this for the PS3 soon, it would definitly boost some sales.. but it's probably too early
Sod making it even smaller...........work on the PS3...get that smaller....get the controller easier to use and more user freindly!!
PS3 size not even looking at price reductions.. it's just ugly big if you ask me (the 360 as well) so just for the cosmetics I wouldn't mind a smaller PS3.
Mmmm.. I'm thinking a portable PS2. Right now Sony is doing the right thing by focusing R&D on what matters, the last generation PS2.
Forget tinkering with the PS2 Sony, please put the effort into getting a better PS3 controller! It is PISS poor!
Did you take many decent photographs? I have had a look online and found some tutorials and videos of people pulling them to pieces, but I'd like to see more detailed images.
erm surely they accomplished a fairly small PS2 in the form of the PSP?? but i agree on the latest Gen consoles being far too big!
Stupid of me, I didn't take any. I was just checking if it would be easy to replace the case if third party matt replacements come out... for no reason the surface is full of slight scratches, fingerprints as well as an ugly dust magnet. And don't blame it just because it's glossy, because my printer and my PC case are glossy black too but its hard to see any wear, fingerprints or dust at all.
The point of making the PS2 smaller/more cost effective (and the new revision will be the exact same size as the Slimline, BTW) is that it will be lighter, cost less to ship (in theory) and be cheaper to produce. That might not sound like much of a saving, but PS2s are still selling well and Sony make money on them now. It will help offset the loss they are making on the PS3 currently. Still, it will be interesting to see what they've changed. I like it when new hardware sees the screwdriver!
What bothers me is that there is generally a trade off. When the older style units were updated, prior to the slimline being released there was a terrible run of awful PS2 units. Those became the standard and then limited edition silver, aqua etc and the lasers popped quicker than all the previous models. If you've repaired as many PS2 units as I have (perhaps you have) then you will know the units that are badly designed and cheaply manufactured. I don't know how many of those I've had to recalibrate and replace the guide arm on. And unlike the previous single thread, these units used 2. ARGH! Personally I found the slimline cheap, light and rather lacking in robustness. Anything else cut from it just means it's even less robust. I could be wrong, yet I saw it happen with previous Sony revisions I hope they haven't just designed something cheap and cheerful. I don't think I could stand the PS3 being slagged to bits AND the PS2 suddenly appearing in the news as having become a pig. Sony probably couldn't either. I wish they had revised the case and made it taller, but more square. That would have been interesting.
Normally, despite the favourable exchange rate, we Brits end up having to spend £99 on a $99 item. It sucks! Are they really suggesting the PS2 will drop to that level? Really??? There's life in the old dog yet, I'd have thought they'd have milked it a bit longer.
I reckon they'll drop it to the same price as the psone & if they are clever they'll do a console & screen combo. The ps3 price drop will then follow. Hopefully some decent games will turn up around then too. smf
Hmmmm.... Would you prefer it smaller, with an external power supply and potential overheating issues aka 360, or bigger with an internal supply? I actually like it the way it is. Sure, it's big, but it fits (size-wise) with the rest of my AV gear, so I don't think it's size is too much of an issue, and I'd never trade reliability for a smaller unit.... Dave.
Size isn't changing. Just weight. They're $130CDN now, and at $99, how could I not get a new PS2? I want a quieter, smaller system to replace my old phat PS2.
Your phat PS2 is probably built better and will last longer. My opinion of the slimline ha always been a cheap piece of crap. I mean you know it's bad when a model of Playstation 2 has compatibility issues with Playstation 2 games. And I think other than a certain bundle or something in japan you can't get new phat ps2s anymore.
my wife saw a Slimline PS2 the other day for the first time (she has had her eyes closed it think!) and thought that it looked 'Cute' and promptly wanted one.. for no other reason then she thought it was better then that 'hideous brick' of a fat PS2
