Heat sink? You mean the metal shielding? That's not for heat to my knowledge. Cart may work without it, but I wouldn't suggest it.

A metal shield would help reduce interference either going into the cart or leaving it. While the Everdrive64 clearly has not been tested and approved by the FCC I don't think you'd need to add one if it appears to be working just fine.
