Hi :smile-new: I have a PAL Everdrive 64 that I've had working great with my PAL N64 for many months now. However after "upgrading" to a new HDTV that lacks s-video input and seeing how much composite video sucks compared to s-video I have taken it as a sign I should finally get that RGB modded 60Hz N64 I've always wanted lol. So my question is will an Everdrive 64 with a PAL CIC work properly with NTSC-U roms (for 60Hz and NTSC Colour system?) on an RGB modded NTSC-J N64 using a Passport Plus III import adaptor and proper NTSC region 'boot' cartridge in the back of the Passport Plus III? I know I'm going to get a lot of "change the CIC! Its easy to de-solder and change CIC" posts and I admit that would be the best solution I ask about the Passport Plus III specifically because using the Passport Plus III would then allow me to use the same Everdrive 64 on both PAL and NTSC consoles, which would be nice :smile-new:
NTSC roms already default 60hz when run by PAL N64. (the opposite as well. PAL roms default 50hz by NTSC N64.) Because 50hz and 60hz are software controlled on N64. Only composite/s-video color encoding is in hardware. Which RGB doesn't use anyway. An NTSC system isn't going to offer much benefit unless you particularly need to play games incompatible with Everdrive 64, or start investing in NTSC original carts.
Thank you for your quick reply. The main reason I want this is simply for the enhanced RGB video output as I now have no s-video inputs on my TV and now have a much worse picture with composite than I previously did with s-video. And the switch to NTSC is simply that its both easier to find and cheaper to buy a pre modded RGB NTSC-J console than it is to find and buy a pre-modded NUS-001 (FRA) PAL console. I have already ordered the pre-modded NTSC-J console so my main concern is now that the Everdrive 64 with PAL CIC will not work in the Passport Plus III to boot in the NTSC console and I'll have to change CIC. Ideally I'd love to know if it will work before my console arrives giving me plenty of time to do the de-soldering etc. if it won't work in the passport. Thanks again
Sorry I forgot to add that I already have the Passport Plus III import adaptor and several original NTSC games hence why its a much easier solution (if it will work!) than changing CIC is.
Well the photos are 14 months old, so I'm not really sure if I tried using cheats. I think I did, but I could be wrong. The next time I set it up I'll give it a try, but it'll probably be a while...
Wow! Thank you fraktmp thats great to know :biggrin-new: Conker2012 once I have my console I will try out some cheats and let you know!
I guess it's good reference to see this working. I don't see much long term value in keeping the flash cart PAL compatible for your own use.
Yes! I can confirm this. I now have my RGB modded NTSC console and can confirm this works great! It is the method I'm currently using with my own PAL Everdrive 64 :biggrin-new: Unfortunately, you can only boot into the Everdrive OS if selecting to 'load game without code' from the Passport Plus III menu so no cheats I'm afraid. I agree. I already had plenty of original NTSC carts, hence already having the Passport Pluss III import adaptor. But now seeing games in RGB at 60Hz its very clear that my PAL N64 will probably never see any more use so it makes little sense to keep using the import adaptor. My only concern is the soldering, well not the soldering actually as even though I have little experience all previous attempts at soldering went well - Its the de-soldering I dread! Getting the CIC off an NTSC cart is fine, soldering it onto the Everdrive 64 is fine, but, its getting the PAL CIC removed from the Everdrive that is the problem! Anyone got a link to a good, clear detailed link or video on de-soldering from an Everdrive 64?
thanks for the confirmation ng7. i currently use my pal everdrive on a pal rgb modded console. if i get a NTSC RGB modded N64 in the future, i plan to use passport plus iii with my pal everdrive. though i am completely satisfied with my N64 now. 60 hz RGB is great.
Wouldn't the opposite be better, use passport plus iii in the likely rare event you need to use everdrive on a pal n64?
I dont see why anyone thought this wouldnt work? doesnt it just connect the CIC to the donor cart and the rest to the flash cart?
i do not want to change CIC in everdrive, plus i didn't buy a ntsc 64 yet, it will be useful if i buy it in the future.
