Hi Everdrive Fans, today i had an idea and i wanted to know what you think about it. The basic idea is to cut out the Lable Area of an N64 Cartridge and include a LCD Display lets say 640x480. The LCD would be connected to the Everdrive. On the SD card should be a folder with scanned pictures of the Game Labels. The picture Files should be named with the Gamecodes. So when for example Zelda OoT is loaded, it should look also for a lable picture with matching gamecode and display it on the LCD as long the game is played. See mockup: I know it wont be simple and this would require changes on the everdrive and also on the Software. Maybe also a normal N64 Card wont let it fit but in the age of 3D Printing it is possible to make something for it. This could also work for other everdrives where the Game Card is sticking out of the Console. What do you think?
Nice idea, but I don't think too many people would pay extra for that feature (I know I wouldn't). How often do you look at the cart while playing a game? Also, depending on the screen it will look off. Leave out a backlight, you'll probably get a barely readable, dark label, include one and your label will "glow" all the time. Maybe there's a way to work around that (e.g. different type of screen, maybe OLED? or stick with b/w and use eink?), but you won't get far with cheap chinese noname LCDs, that's for sure.
Consider that you lose almost 1/3 of the label while the cart is inserted. The e-ink would be neat since you won't lose the display while the system is powered off or the cart is removed.
A small LCD with the rom name would be cheaper and still visible. Something like this: http://dx.com/p/iic-i2c-2-5-blue-screen-lcd-display-module-for-arduino-green-black-266170
I believe there are prototypes that can show (somewhat washed-out) colors. But from a practical standpoint, yes, eink is b/w (or rather, grayscale) only. edit: I spoke too soon, Hanvon seems to have been selling devices with the 'triton' color panels for a while. Still, they're a far cry from 'proper' color prints. Also, the next generation ('carta') was grayscale-only again, so they seem to have given up for the time being...?
