I realize that X'Eye systems are not very common so I don't know if anybody else has experienced this. When I load a Master System ROM on the Everdrive I get a screen with garbled sprites. Sound is just as it should be and so is the controller. Here's a screenshot: Now, if I try to do the same thing on a Genesis model 2 it works as it should. The example is with the American version of Phantasy Star but this happens with every Master System ROM I've tried. I already tried updating the Everdrive's OS from V23 to the latest V29 with no luck. I don't know if this is a problem with the X'Eye's Master System compatibility being disabled like on the Nomad or a software problem with the Everdrive. Any help on the matter is appreciated. Thank you.
I believe it's supposed to work... BTW does the Everdrive menu say "megakey off"? I have a cdx and model 1 with that odd problem, making region lock Japanese games (Golden Axe 3, Sailor Moon, etc) not work if left unpatched.
X'Eye have sms mode, but hard reset does not work as far as i know, so there is not possible to switch between md and sms mode. when system was configured in 16 bit mode by cart OS, there is not way to back in sms mode
Thanks for the replies. Oh OK, that makes sense. So the VDP is in 16bit mode thus the garbled sprites. Darn, it looks like I'll have to keep the Genesis 2 handy for whenever I need my 8bit fix.
Yeah sad to admit I have little good to say about X'Eye, one cursed machine. This is yet another sample of why,
Yeah, that thing is more trouble than it's worth. I went to the trouble of finding a service manual for it, replaced the CD lens, searched all over for a compatible power supply and now I find out I can't use it for SMS games without getting more hardware. Ugh. I'm seriously thinking about doing an S-VIDEO mod on it and just selling it off to the highest bidder. Another problem is that you can't use the BIOS loading trick to get around the region lockout with this thing either. The Wondermega BIOS crashes as soon as it loads. I guess it tries to initialize all that extra karaoke hardware and panics.
Do you still have the service manual by chance? I have an X'Eye that won't load cds that I'm trying to diagnose.
I do. However, I found out the hard way that if you don't use the proper power supply with the unit it will have problems reading discs. Make sure it's a 9V 1.5amp power supply. Anything else is a big no-no. If that's not it, try cleaning the lens with alcohol and a Q-tip. Be very gentle with that. If that doesn't work, take apart the X'eye and on the CDROM daughterboard there are 4 potentiometers. Make note of their current settings before adjusting them! Try doing slight adjustments to the CDBIAS and/or CDGAIN. If that doesn't work, your last resort is to adjust the potentiometer on the CD lens assembly. Again Make a note of it's current setting before adjusting it! The last method will wear out the laser a bit faster so it's only recommended as a last resort. If none of that works I guess I could scan the CDROM related pages of the manual but it's mostly just technical data.
Sure, I'll get around to scanning it as JVC Parts doesn't have anything related to the RGM10BU (X'Eye) in stock anymore.
