So... I have these .sit and .sea files that I need to expand/extract (the files are from around 1999).
I'm not a Mac user, so I went ahead and tried StuffIt Expander for windows... it didn't recognize the files (oh, the irony!).

I looked around for other file archivers that support these extensions, but ran into all kind of "problems". The ones for linux are frontends and require additional app/libraries (and I can't seem to find what the name of these would be).
Others are for MacOS X, which I do not have handy (I'd have to create a VM and deal with whatever time it takes to install).
I ended up trying with SheepShaver running MacOS 9, with StuffIt Expander 5.5 as well as StuffIt Standard 7.0.3. These installed fine, but wouldn't open either sit or sea files (at this point I can only assume it's a user error, as I'm not a Mac user and clearly don't know my way with such system).

So here I am asking for help. If someone has a Mac handy and want to help me with this I'd appreciate; otherwise any pointer to useful guides/troubleshooting for extracting these kind of files is also much appreciated.

on OS X this version of stuffit will open them no sweat. http://www.stuffit.com/expander-signup.html it is free, so long as you insert your e-mail. Use a throwaway one unless you have any intention of being offered deals, which are decent but i doubt you want them.

We did investigate .sit files on windows at my workplace. the conclusion is its a no go, we had problems similar to yours where the end result was borked.

The Unarchiver for OS X will do .sea and .sit files, I think. It's a really nice app, and it handles virtually any file compression format you can imagine. It's free too, and doesn't require you to enter any information.

Anyway, if you'd like to send the files to me, I'll try to decompress them.

Thank you both; however my point was I wanted to avoid having to look for a MacOS X ISO and going through the trouble/time of installing it.
I'm doing that now anyway, though it'll take a while...

In the meantime, if anyone can think of any other way, please let me know :)

So, I was able to extract the .sit files by running an emulated Mac with SheepShaver.
Unfortunately the .sea files were not recognized by any of the many file archivers I tried under Windows, Linux, MacOS and even BeOS (x86) and Haiku.

    Why BeOS and Haiku?
Well, after trying under Windows, Linux and MacOS I started researching and finally realized the .sea files I have are for BeOS... the problem is that they're for the PPC version of BeOS, as opposed to the x86 version.

I then went on looking for ways to run BeOS PPC emulated or under a VM, but apparently it's not possible.

Anyone here has access to a PPC based Mac that can run BeOS and is willing to help me with this?
Here's a list of supported BeOS supported hardware:

I don't have a PPC-based Mac with me at the moment, but as I said before, I'm willing to give it a try on my Mac. The Unarchiver says it supports .sea archives, and it's worked with every other compressed file I've tried - so it should work. Just a suggestion.

I'm not sure, but the architecture of the computer that created the archive shouldn't affect the file itself.

Sorry, I missed the line where you offered to try decompressing the files; here they are (let me know if you want me to upload somewhere else):
    ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/mac/lang/Metrowerks/CWBDR3/optional_split/

Normally the architecture wouldn't matter, but in this case i *think* it does, as .sea files are self-extract archives (ie. like the ones you create with WinZip or WinRAR, which become an EXE to easily share with people that may not have the app to decompress), which results in a binary file for the architecture it was created on. I'm not sure about the specifics of the sea format, but maybe this is done in a way that the compressed data is not readable without running the file... not sure.

Anyway, I'll be crossing my fingers and lighting some candles hoping you can extract these ^_^

I just tried to decompress the files, and it didn't work. The Unarchiver recognizes the files, but when I try to extract them it flashes a loading bar for a second, and then disappears. Looking at the log, it says "Denied process 3818(UNKNOWN) access to shared list cx.c3.theunarchiver.LSSharedFileList". There are several instances of this with different numbers. So I guess you're right that it's not compatible with x86 - or at least with modern Macs specifically. Sorry.

I might try using StuffIt Expander later, and see if that makes any difference. I'll let you know the result.

I might be able to help you later, what are you expecting to find in the BeOS version of Codewarrior's documentation anyway?

    Thank you both! :)

    @unclejun
Along with the documentation for the platform you were targetting (ie. in this case BeOS), Metrowerks provided "generic" documentation in all their CodeWarrior suites (user manual for the IDE, Debugger, C/C++ Reference, etc).

I'm interested in this particular documentation for 2 reasons:
    -The Targeting BeOS manual
-The v3 "generic" Guides (I have a theory these should be the same, or from a similar date when the CW for PS1 R5 was released, so I'd like to verify this and add it to the files I shared recently)

I've tried with Stuffit and no joy.

I believe these are self expanding archives which use OS X PPC drivers in order to open.

I think the only way to get them to open will be to drop them onto a PPC OS X installation and then change the file extension to .app instead of .sea, they should sort themselves out then.

It might also work if you use Rosetta on a Snow Leopard or earlier machine.

Sadly I don't have access to a copy of Snow Leopard, nor the hard drive space to accommodate a virtual machine/partition. Finding someone with SL shouldn't be too difficult especially seeing as a large portion of the Mac community still have that "you won't catch me upgrading to that new fangled iOS based OS X OS" attitude.

Anyway I hope a solution is found. Stuffit is possibly the worst piece of software ever written for anything ever. Felt dirty installing it onto my machine.

Thank you Twimfy and la-li-lu-le-lo for trying!
At this point I guess the only way will be to find someone with BeOS running under PPC...

Once again, I have to say: YOU ROCK!!! and THANK YOU!!!

The good news: it includes the CW BeOS docs
The bad news: the generic docs are for an earlier version than I expected, so I'll have to keep on looking for these. No big deal though.

Thank you everyone for your time and help! :)

I dumped all my Codewarrior for BeOS discs while I was at it, there are 2 versions newer than the DR3 (R3 and 1.5), you can grab them on my ftp now or later...atleast I had a good excuse to turn on my BeBox!

    Thank you! :)
I really appreciate you always going the extra mile to help.

    I'm downloading now.

While investigating this whole .sea thing, I learnt a little bit more about BeOS (I always thought it was an x86 only OS...) and read a little about the BeBox. Looks like an interesting device.
A quick search seems to indicate it hasn't been really discussed anywhere in this forums, so I'll read a little more and maybe start a thread.
