I'm looking for a free shell replacement that's fairly similar to Explorer. I've been using Aston, and I love it, but I don't care for the $30 price tag. I'd consider buying it in the future, but I don't exactly have a lot to toss around right now. Any suggestions?
I'm also looking to replace explorer, but with something more mem/cpu efficient? Is it possible? Taemos, you know you don't need to pay...
Yeah, you know you don't NEED to pay a developer for their work that you're using on a constant basis... -_-
Well, that was my other opinion on it, but I figured it was obvious if I'm unwilling to use a crack. Work is the only place I would be using a different shell.
Well it's only $30... what's the big deal? Also, it's a serial you need, not a crack. If I'm not going to buy something, what difference does it make that I download it? No one looses money. Infact there's a greater chance that I will like the program and then buy it. I don't give a shit if someone spent 2 years in a basement coding it.
I'm sure all the game designers or people who program for a living on this board are happy to hear that.
Meh, I don't have two pennies to rub together right now; so they wouldn't get my money either way. At least this was if I download something I think is amazing, I'll start having a (long) save for it. I have no problem with unprofitable piracy, it's a great feeling people downloading stuff you've made and giving you some feedback on it. Although perhaps it's different with music, I don't know. Of course, people selling warezed stuff is a different matter... But we are getting way of topic now, and it's not like we'll finally reach agreement either way. These discussions could go back and forth forever.
I'll just buy the damn thing. I haven't seen a decent free shell, and I like this thing far better than Explorer. The problem is getting the money and then sending it .
hmm for file intensive work i use most times ztree a remake of the good old xtree gold for dos but now working under windows its no drag and drop and works with keyboard shortcuts alone but its fast as hell
I like Windows fine, I just wanted to change the look a little bit. I'm going to buy a key for Aston. It apparently uses less memory than Explorer anyway. Looks good + good on memory = worth $30 .
That's no real alternative to anything. None of my apps would run on it at all. The OS may be better, but the support is just terrible. It's a shame, because I couuld really use the something that's easier on my CPU. 2.6Ghz isn't what it used to be
It cracks me up that Linux is always an off-the-cuff answer to questions like this. It's like, "Sure, I'll give up 99% of my functioning games and my productivity applications that I've been using for years in favor of something where I have to learn the goddamned FILESYSTEM over from scratch, not to mention unfamiliar applications that aren't half as powerful as what I was using." :smt043 And this is, of course, without mentioning shoddy device drivers that may or may not work with your particular hardware, and the fact that half the programs you download have to be compiled from scratch, as that's what you're expected to be able to do in Linux. The only alternative a lifetime Windows/DOS user is going to find switching to Linux is an alternative to productivity. Trade you my PIII 866? :smt043
Sorry to bring this back up, but if anyone was looking for the same thing (free shell replacement), I started using Litestep. Once you get the right theme, it seems to be a very nice shell.
I could not agree more. One of these alternative OS needs to get their ass in grear when it comes to 3rd party support. It's not that I don't like XP, it's great - I just wish I could kick back into something ugly but very CPU/Mem friendly. I'm using Windows BLinds now. Looks sweet, uses no resources and can be turned off in one click. Not ideal, but it does give me a nicer working environment
I like something that changes how Windows looks, and hopefully uses less memory than Explorer. This is how Litestep looks with the current theme I'm using (the background I found on some other website).
AH! Litestep! I used that a lot back in 1999/2000. I love the "4 desktops" thing. Does it still do that? Plus you can make your own interface, pretty much. I stopped using it, though, many things crashed with it in Win98. It's been a while.
"4 desktops"? I don't know... The only thing it's choked up on was TerraIM, and even then it was just one particular screen name, so it was probably AIM that did it.
