bit of a naive question, but never used sony products much, but could the vga cable be used on a normal ps2 to enable vga output on games?

PS2 Linux has been sold, anyone want FFXI? I won't lie to you, it's absolute rubbish and in my opinion shouldn't even have a number on the title.

You get like 7 CDs in the box so if you don't like it you get a nice set of coasters.

If anybody still wants to buy the Official PS2 Linux kit (PAL version only) you can buy JUST the cable and DVD set here: https://e-logistic.co.uk/products.php?product=88

It works out at £25 GBP.

Arrgh! I just came back & saw this Linux stuff! Oh, well - enjoy Parris & if you decide you don't need the linux disc, let me know?!

I actually won a PAL linux kit + PS2 on ebay.co.uk, but it looks like the seller has stiffed me - so I'm on the hunt again. :-( And unfortunately, I don't think that the e-logistics place will ship outside the EU (plus I need a PAL/HDD capable PS2, which my current debugs are not).

BTW, to answer diddydonn - in theory the VGA cable can be used on other software, but (a) I don't believe many (if any) games support it & (b) you absolutely need a sync-on-green monitor for it to work with & they're pretty rare. I have the NTSC linux kit & don't use the VGA cable, instead configuring the memory card boot file to output DTV 720P (or component 720 progressive) - it's quite usable on my LCD panel at that res & means I don't have to swap cables around on games.

Limey, if you want me to buy the kit for you I can, and then post it in with the DTL-H75000? If so, lemme know.

Yeah but when you go to order it, you get redirected to the one I posted up. As it's a SCEE affiliated thingy they won't post outside of PAL territories.

I'll need to find out how you configured the memory card so that I can do the same. I doubt whether my Dell 19" TFT will support the VGA cable as standard (i.e. sync-on-green).

If you need a cheap PS2 with HDD bay I can send you one from the UK when I find one with a working laser. Locally I can pick up damaged PS2 units to rebuild for approximately $20.

Yup, they both end up in the same place! (And the page loading has always been on the slow side for me, too.)

Thanks for the offer dickibow/babu. The one problem is that I believe that I'll still need an HDD capable PAL PS2 & getting those shipped over is an expensive hassle. It all depends on whether the linux kit requires an official Sony firmware HDD, or can use any drive (as the latter do generally work with debugs, even my funky PAL unit which hangs if the official HDD is used). I also really wanted the whole kit, for completionist purposes.

Hmm, dickibow - I might take you up on that anyway - at least as a backup plan. At some point, they're going to sell out of the discs as well (as happened here in the US).

I'll see if I can dig up the details for you. It's a pretty simple edit to /mnt/mc00/p2lboot.Opt on the MC. The tricky part used to be the blind install you had to do if you didn't have a compatible monitor, but theres a trick that allows you to manually set the display mode during bootup, which should make the install easier - you press Select & R2 to put it in PAL mode. I can't remember the exact point you have to do this, since it's years since I actually did my install, but there's a bunch of usefull stuff over at http://playstation2-linux.com which is the NTSC community, but the principles should be the same for the PAL kit.

    The newbie FAQ is here:http://playstation2-linux.com/docs/cfyc/display_doc.php?docid=14

The general FAQ is here: http://playstation2-linux.com/faq.php

The supported monitor list is here (check, you might be lucky):http://playstation2-linux.com/sog.php

The old blind install route is covered here: http://playstation2-linux.com/files/cfyc/HOWTO_blindly_install_ps2linux.html

Feel free to PM if you need help.

Thanks! If I don't get anywhere with running it on my debugs, I might be back to you on that.

limey, the linux kit can use any hdd, it doesn't check for the official one, but I don't know if it will accept a hdd over 120GB (the release 1.0 might, but I'm pretty sure the beta release won't)

the button combination select+R2 for PAL, select+R1 for ntsc or even Select+L1 for vga must be hold when the disc boots.

the vga cable can be used with all the games supporting the progressive scan mode (480p) and higher resolutions like the japanese version of gran turismo5 that can display in 1080i, you just a need a suitable monitor or projector.

Another thing about the linux kit, even though the Test PS2 supposedly has twice the ram of retail models, linux won't(can't) detect it, so you're stuck with 32MB...and for the record, I tried to run it on the Tool, it doesn't detect the 128MB either.

UJ, I can't get into to verify the RAM on the Test motherboard. I gave up. If I forced it any more my mobo would have cracked. I've found the schematic diagrams for the test unit (or rather the retail version of the same model #) and I've removed everything properly, it's just stuck solid.

All I need now are the other parts (mouse / keyboard) as I have everything else.

Limey, great information (backed up with UJ's information). Handy tips!

Unless you're a completionist, any USB keyboard & most USB mice will work happily with the kit. My semi-dedicated linux PS2 currently has a Apple USB mouse plugged into it & shares a keyboard with a PC via a KVM switch. :icon_bigg

Interesting - I thought that it only supported VESA modes with the vga cable, though since I've never possesed a SOG capable monitor, I've never investigated further.

Ah, good. I was hoping that might be the case, especially after finding that the linux install isn't locked to the PS2 it was installed on - the drive can happily be moved to another PS2 & linux booted there. Thanks for the tip about max HDD size on the beta.
