Crazy right? we haven't even seen a consumer version and its already sold, and for 2 billion? either these guys have something big hidden in there or facebook is burning money for the lulz Sauce: http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/oculus-joins-facebook/
Ze Notch has spoken: We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out. https://twitter.com/notch/statuses/448586381565390848 I remember everybody said how it was nuts..........fuck, I said it was nuts! The bubble just got bubblier....
Goes to show Facebook has way too much money, soon they'll start buying out supermarket giants and other stores. WhatsApp and Oculus is just the start.
Why is everyone so negative about the takeover? It's not like Facebook will prohibit Oculus Rift from being used with games. The biggest problem I can identify is the addition of advertisement in games, but there will certainly be ways around this like always. I don't think many people saw this move coming, Facebook acquiring a video game hardware developer. But at the same time, it makes pretty good sense if they were to develop a video chat or conference tool that allows people to travel virtually to a different location using a not-yet-developed type of camera that allows streaming of 360 degree all-around footage.
So... in a decade we'll have the Amazon Flame vs. the Facebook VR Gamebook? Oh, and whatever Nintendo is doing.
All this "Rift is dead" bullshit is retarded. Have a look at what Palmer Luckey is saying about it: http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey This project is Palmer's dream. It's his blood, sweat, and tears. Do you honestly believe he would have just sold off carte blanche to Facebook to do whatever they want? Of course not. Don't be idiots. Say what you like about Facebook the web site, they actually have a fascinating history as a technology company. Check out some of their open source projects: https://github.com/facebook No doubt some will read this post as some kind of endorsement of Facebook and everything it does. It isn't, so don't be clutchin' at straws mmkay.
Sure Facebook are behind it now, which adds resources to produce a product good. However, I don't like the idea of Facebook becoming a giant and rubbing it's balls on everything.
Maybe it was his dream, but he just made 2 billion dollars. If I had that much from my "Dream" id say I pretty much fulfilled my dream, even if I sold it.
Facebook spent $2 Billion, they will want their return on investment. They could care less about Palmers dream if it interferes with them receiving revenue. Regardless, I don't blame him for taking the generous offer.
The disturbing thing is that zuckerberg said in the conference call that they will be shaping the future of VR. I cant stand facebook to be honest and only use it when i need to get in touch with family. I dont blame palmer for taking the $2B, i just think the finished product wll be cheap and nasty now for maximum revenue. I hope to dear god im wrong as ive been waiting for consumer VR for a number of years now.
Fuck Oculus, anything FB touches turns into a wagon for their own interests. I can't support their decision out of principle, no matter how much business sense it makes to them.
