I recently acquired an original PS1 and was hoping someone could tell me what it is and if it is rare. Its a PS1 model SCPH-5552 sealed in a red bag with red tape over the CD tray. It also has sealed joypad, new RF lead, sealed instructions & mains adapter. Stuck on the underside of the PS1 (inside the red bag) is a barcode sticker with an SCE Europe job number on. It came in a plain brown cardboard box which is fitted with internal flaps to hold everything in place. Around this box is an open ended Playstation sleeve with official PS1 artwork and the words 'Factory reconditioned' printed in several languages on the front. Is this a PS1 that was bought new, didn't work so was sent back to Sony for repairs, then never used? BTW I got this for £7.50 which I reckon is pretty good
It's not retail sealed and sounds refurbished. I would keep it. Chances are that laser will last you a while . Sealed retail units tend to go for a lot on ebay (too much).
For the same reason you can get refurbs for pretty much any current system. The things break. They go in for warranty service. Manufacturer sells a refurb cheap or sends it out as a warranty replacemet. Typically if it comes fully packed with accessories then it was sold as a refurb direct to an end user. -hl718
Ah, that makes sense! It's pretty cool and a keeper I think. Not factory new but probably wasn't played much before it broke by the looks of it. Thanks for answering my questions!
I got my ps1 the day it was released. It was a refurb. Day one, funco had refurbs. Three of them broke, 4th one was the charmer. Those refurbs have the firmware hole in them, the cd audio / cdr exploit.
The red bag rings a bell. In 1997 I got my first PS1. Unfortunately the spindle fell apart within 1 year and was having minor port 1 probs. So I phoned up Sony and they offered me a repair or something called a 'refurbished unit'. I had no clue what refurb meant at the time. Anyways, I said yes and a courier turned up at my place with this PS1 sealed in a red plastic bag surrounded by a cardboard sleeve (no artwork and no writing indicating it to be a refurb) and I swapped my damaged PS1 with him. Still got this refurb unit from 1998 and it is still going strong now. My PS1 is still wrapped in this red plastic bag since I find it good at keeping the dust out lol!
