Just thought I'd warn people about a dude on Yahoo Auctions that is making and selling fake Famicom sample cartridges. Here are some examples of two I bought thinking they were the real deal, only one of the auction pages is still up though.

    Dragon Ball:

    (archived too: https://web.archive.org/web/20180515114803/https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c639460860)

The other one was Valis: The Fantasm Soldier, here's what I found inside them:

In Dragon Ball it's just a regular HVC-SLROM-02 board, not a sample board at all. I don't have a Famicom at the moment to try it in, but I might crack open my 5-pin Gyromite and use it on my NES - I bet it's not even Dragon Ball. Valis is an HVC-UNROM-03.

So yeah, the guy's yahoo name is duckoo2017, avoid him at all costs. He's currently trying to sell two more fakes, or at least what I'm assuming are fakes:

Yahoo Japan Auction is not what it used to be. Lots of fakes around now (games, accessories, soundtracks too). Looking more and more like eBay. I wonder if all of them are local sellers or if there are westerners trying their luck too.

This guy has been around for quite some time. He used to buy and sell stuff under the name umatanirui. He actually has a collection of legitimate Famicom protos which he uses to create his fakes, copying the labels, even going as far as imitating the damage. Some of them, though, he just makes from scratch, including a humorously awful A Week of Garfield fake that he sold a little while ago - I actually remember outbidding him on a legit AWoG prototype once, back when he went by the name umatanirui.

I once posted some comparisons between his fakes and the originals from aucfan archives. Here is a 2ch thread where some Japanese gamers discuss the issue:

Also, that first game is Donald Duck, not Dragon Ball :p

I totally knew that, guess that's what I get for watching/listening to DBZ in the background while I'm on my PC :p It's in my braaaiiiiin!:eek::eek:

Thanks for backing up what I said, all I really had to go by (other than the examples I talked about) was a twitter message from a preservasionist dude who's big enough to be trusted.
