goto: http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=35862 Black Isle's Fallout 3, code-named Van Buren during development at Interplay. Be aware that this demo is in pre-alpha-state, and does not have full functionality. It may crash frequently and does not have any kind of finalized combat. However, it should still hold interest for any Fallout fan. We hope that you enjoy it and can reminisce over the good times of the past. enjoy
While I'm not a huge fan of fallout I did enjoy the first one(never played the sequel) and I have to say I really don't care that this game was never released. From what I played it seems like fallout in 3d. Which basically means a less detailed world and characters. Maybe if I really loved the first two I would see this as a good thing, but I would rather the next fallout evolve the series in some way. Or atleast move away from the god awful isometric perspective. I'm hoping Bethesda's fallout will retain the turn based battles but simplify other aspects of the game, like the stats/leveling and inventory systems, and make the game playable in either first person, or a perspective similar to the 3rd person view in morrowind. Seeing the world through the player character's eyes is the easiest way(IMO) to make a world believable, and it helps the player think less about stats and more about the people, places, and things in the world. Once they "forget" they're playing a game it makes it harder to resist the urge to (god-forbid) roleplay. Instead of killing and robbing every npc they start to think about the moral aspects of, for example, killing a single mother in order to take the fancy weapon her dead husband left her. You still need decent writing, and npc's who do or say things that make them believable as characters, but using a first person perspective is a decent start to creating a semi realistic, believable environment. Most of this is mostly due to my tastes in adventure-rpgs. None of this applies to jrpg's since they are more "gamey" and less simulation based then computer rpgs on purpose.
I tried it out my self and it is really glichly. I couldn't get the textures to be all there for some reason. Most of it is there but theres a lot of black where the textures should be. Oh well i wasn't expecting much anyway
We must have played different Fallouts. I don't remember it being about morality, nor do I think it would benefit from it. THAT SAID, I think I would also like to bring Fallout's camera down to eye level, though I don't necessarily think first person is the only way to go. I like to see my character after armor upgrades.
I thought the rights to the game were bought by another developer. Bethesda I think it was. Thanks for the link, anyway.
Fallout wasn't about morality, and I don't think fallout 3 should try and force it on the player, just that the npc's say and do things make them believable as character. In most games the only thing the player considers before killing a non-violent npc is what they have to gain or lose, and find this boring for the most part. I don't know if this really makes any sense, I might try and clarify later. While I would prefer the game to be played in fp, it would be nice to have the ability to play in third if needed. Playing a stealth character would likely be a pain to play in fp unless bethesda devotes a lot of time to that mechanic and really fine tunes it. And as you mentioned it would be nice to be able to see what your character looks like.
