I got a broken FDS off a friend and recently discovered that it's officially unfixable (the circuit board is broken and can't be soldered). I have another friend who's in Japan for a couple more weeks and is willing to pick one up for me - does anyone know about how much they run over there? I need to give her the maximum price I'm willing to pay before she goes, but having a general idea of what I might expect to pay would really help - I don't wanna tell her $40 if they cost double that or something. :p

Prices varies widely on whether you go to a boutique or a junk shop, and the condition and completeness. $40 could buy you one SOMEWHERE, but how much time do you expect your friend to spend shopping around?

I honestly have no idea. I assume she just has a particular shop in mind that she'll go to, or maybe she knows of several in the same general area. But I told her that $50 is the max I'm willing to pay, so I mean, if the shop she goes to doesn't have it at that price, she just won't buy it. I can get them on ebay too.

I used to buy broken ones at game recycle shops for 100-500 yen a pop. 9 times out of 10 it was just a broken belt. I would fix them then sell them for a fair profit. Anyway, it may be easier and cheaper to buy one with a broken belt. Usually the shop tells you what the problem with the unit is.

Indeed you can but them for less then 1000 yen in recycle shops however I am sure his friend is going to love going to a number of recycle shops to find one or to spend a good half a day traveling to one to buy one too.

In Akihabara there are a few but they were around 6000 to 8000 yen but they would have a new belt and be working.

Do what I did, call them first. Whenever I was looking for something specifically, I call them first. Even if it was something in the junk bin, they always checked for me.

Who knows, maybe his friend is like me and loves cruising recycle shops. It never took me half a day. I got into my car, drove to pre-determined recycle shop located less than 10 kilometers away, and browse.

    Akihabara is severely overrated.

Dang, how much would it cost to ship it overseas though? Almost as much as you bought it for?

Of course I mean by Airmail and EMS

If the said friend doesn't have a car (and probably lives in Tokyo) then getting to a number of recycle shops could be a lot harder as it could mean a fair old walk to one from a station that would require probably half a days travelling...

I loved crusing round them but I had a bike and even going to 6 different ones would involve a 150km round trip and involve the best part of a day. Although each place is different as I hardly saw any FDSs in my travels (saw 1 really nasty one and that was it..)
