Hello, I, like many of you here love to collect retro gaming equipment. On one of my travels to east Asia, Seoul, specifically, I came across this cartridge in a 1,000 won ($1) sale-bin: "Badug" (romanization of 바둑), is simply the Korean name for the strategy board game commonly known as "Go" - its Japanese name. This game intrigued me because the official Korean version of the NES is actually the same form factor as the US front loader. This game is obviously intended for the Japanese top-loading Famicom. The game has Korean script on it and is manufactured by a Korean-named company "Hey Sung Electronics". I will assume there was a period in which Korean gamers purchased Japanese Famicom imports, in advance of an official NES console release in Korea, and game manufacturers simply released unlicensed games during this interim. Anyways, I figured members on this site are well versed in obscure video games, I want to ask: have any of you heard of this game or seen a rom dump of it? Given that a satisfactory "Go" AI still does not exist (to my knowledge), I will assume this game was solely intended for 2 controller play. (I don't think the Famicom CPU could really execute this type of number-crunching) I do not have a Japanese Famicom to test this on, unfortunately. Anyways, any info about this game would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Judging from the back label, the game looks like your run-of-the-mill pirate. If I had to guess it probably isn't too rare, nor worth too much. IMHO of course.
It really depends on what's on the cart - if it's a Korean original game, you've got something interesting and possibly previously unknown. But the artwork is taken from the Japanese release of Othello, so it's more likely to just be a pirate of that. You never can tell for sure without trying it out though.
Thanks for the tip, yes I see what you mean about the cart sticker art being a rip-off. It seems slightly odd to go through all that effort to change the sticker art to advertise a game that has nothing to do with othello (other than having black and white game pieces). Why not just leave the Othello text on there? (of course this is all mere speculation on my part) I'll post the final verdict on this when I am able to load the game~
That's a pretty nice cart with the logo carved in. But yeah, 99,9% chance that it's just a bootleg of a Japanese Go game.
I apologize for digging up my old thread. I finally have a Famicom and was able to test the Korean Badug cartridge. It is simply a repackaged Japanese Go game named "Igo-Shinan" (Go Teaching). Hector published it in 1989. Here are pictures of the front and back of the game:
