    Kevin,

How did you get a DVD movie to play on your PS2? Did you use the software from the Japanese DVD utility discs to install the drivers to your memory card? If so, which disc did you use?

My TEST console is NTSC U/C (DTL-H30101).

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Ok - tried using PAL version DVD Player utility disc version 2.10 (came with DVD remote control) and it would not install onto the memory card. It says error about 10% of the way in and then "un-does" itself.

So.....I installed it onto my memory card using someone else's retail bought PAL PS2 and the data installed fine. I plugged it into my TEST PS2 and ran the DVD but it still comes up with the message "DVD software could not be started".

I have given up - I don't really care because I can use a normal DVD player anyway but it just bugged me that was all!

Anyone else have any suggestions because I am stumped.......

Unless Assembler can confirm otherwise I'm going to bet that he got DVD's playing on a Debug PS2, not a Test PS2.

The main reason the Test units do not play back DVD video is to save on licensing fees. By disabling the functionality, Sony saves some cash on each unit made. Also, if you look at the logo imprints on the top of the unit, a retail PS2 will be certified for DVD Video. A Test PS2 is *not* certified for DVD video.

Can't you just encode some video's into PS2 format, and use that media trick thing? (makes a PS2 format disk with some hacked up PS2 code to make it run like it's an FMV intro or something) or stick a HDD in it and do the exploit, have a decent media player installed on there.

I use early japanese dvd driver on my japanese debug, there is also a dvd all region type card, and the usb plug mod.

I mean xbox and ps2 all play dvd, you really shouldn't be wearing out your TEST drive playing DVD...

    No, it's not a v1.0 only thing.

    A Debug PS2 is different than a Test PS2.

As Assembler just confirmed, he's playing DVDs on his Debug, not on his Test.

If you have a Test, no DVD playback.
