and i really mean FAST :p

the machine is really slow inreading discs, even retails. dvdr and cd doesn't boot at all. so i wqas planning in cleaning the machine and maybe installing a new laser.

so far i've been using parris guide, and everything went smoothly. what i don't understand is the use of the white grind wheel on the upper paryt of the pic...

    see it here
    [IMG]

is it for laser regulation? i tought tests tohave all the regs made automatically...

please let me know what i'm supposed to do with it before i start changing the laser (that maybe is not the real problem since parris tested the machine when shipping it; so it might have taken some hit in the expedition...)

    thanks, karsten

If the design follows the retail practice, that white cog at the top adjusts the height of the sledge carrying the laser. Here's a small guide on adjusting it -> http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:hXypHd-4ZpoJ:www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserPS2.htm+ps2+laser+adjust&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a (from google cache, the site seems dead). Only turn it a small amount each time & note the position, so you can move it back, if it didn't help.

    Which model is that, BTW?

    Hope this helps, Limey.

The white knob is used to raise or lower the laser.

Those models are a real bitch to tweak.

If the laser is old and has problems reading, I would suggest trying to adjust the pots, it might help.

Adjusting that cog is a real pain in the ass. In my experience doing it, it helps to make a mark on the cog just so you can see its position. From there, just find the sweet spot so that it reads all media (or at least that is the goal). My unit is so messed up that I have a different position for each type of media (dvd, cd, ps1, blue/silver, etc). Also, sometimes one click of the cog is all it takes to make a difference.

Don't touch anything, it does it automatically. Not sure if you remembered me mentioning it, but that is one of the beautiful things about the particular Test series. It will calibrate the laser mechanism in order to adjust the depths accordingly. Therefore it will actually adjust whenever a new disc is inserted. That is also why the PS2 Test loads relatively slowly even with a brand new laser inserted. Just set the white plastic cog so the little hole in the top of the white cog is facing the metal cog. Away it will run!

The cog will find it's sweet spot hence it moving. Can you send me an image of the bottom of the laser so I can make sure the anti-static solder is completely removed. Also, let me see how you have it set up.

you can be assured that the laser is properly setted up. it is showing the same behaviour as with the laser that you shipped it to me (long loading times of originals, no start of cd originals (wheter ps1 or ps2), no kind of dvdr ever recognized, no cdr read)... so i'm starting to guess that the problem doesn't lay in the laser but in something else....

If you ship it back to me I will gladly replace it if you wish. Before you do however, can I get images? Interested to see how it is set as it should be 100% - is one of 14 I had and only 2 had issues, which meant I removed all the working components and threw out the dodgy parts.

Just images around the DVD unit. If you open it up, show connections internally and also ribbon cables etc.

The DVD unit was giving no cause for concern prior to shipping. I tested all of the items I sold, so this is frustrating.
