Hello there! I got from a friend a Silver PS2 Slim model SCPH-90001, and it doesn't work. The condition is very bad (a lot of scratches on the case, bunch of stickers, disk laser doesn't slide properly and it doesn't power on). Here's some photos: I still don't have any cable to turn it on, but he said that it didn't even show the on/off light. Any ideas to know what is the problem? There is chances that it doesn't turn on because the system is 120v, and we normally have here 220v, so maybe something blew off inside of it. I'm already managing to opening it to clean it too, because the system is very nasty. Thanks, lolzvid
Here's how to fix it. First off,the plastic. To remove the stickers from it,check this: http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Sticker-from-Plastic Second, for the power supply, you'll need to search a PAL 9000x PS2 and swap the power supplies,as the one you have has a different plug than the PAL machines have. For the laser, check that the plastic head that slides on the gold rail is screwed correctly into the laser and check that the case is correctly closed. If all this is done,it should work.
First and foremost, use another power cord. Perhaps he had a shorted cord and overlooked the possibility. Second, I am assuming this is the final model PS2 Slim with the built in power supply, so, if the PSU is dead, you need to replace it with another from an exact model PS2. Third, if this is the model with the external PSU, simply buy a new one on ebay, but make sure its designed for the 9X1 model.
Of what I know, this model has an internal power supply. He said to me that they replaced to a bi-volt (110v-220v) power supply. I'm already managing to get inside of it. Thanks for the link of how to remove stickers from plastic, that was a pain. Seems like the rail is very dirty and keeps locking the laser. If I clean it, maybe the laser could be fixed and some other issues. Thanks for everybody!
Here's an update: I've cleaned the console, removed the stickers, removed the dust and checked the board, power adapter, fan, and others. Seems like everything is OK... The laser was cleaned, but there's something in a part on the metal shielding (place where the laser is) that is very sticky and it's almost impossible to remove it. Probably some liquid or soda has been by there and left the place a mess... The system is Matrix mod-chipped, and it's everything in place (very good soldering, must give a bonus). When I receive or find a cable to turn it on, maybe the problem can be identified.
Well, hope you get it working.I assume your region uses PAL?According to Wikipedia it seems that in the South America the west part of it uses NTSC and the east part of it uses PAL. Back to PS2s,I wish I could find a NTSC-U PS2 (imported,of course)here where I live (Romania,Bacau)
Got the system working! It boots fine without trouble! The system it self is NTSC, surprisingly! We use normally here in Brazil PAL-M (it's like mixing PAL and NTSC)... EDIT: Just found a mechanic error that didn't let the disc run properly... When i get the system fully working I'll post a photo of it
Cool! Here in Romania,we use PAL-B/G and PAL60.For example,my Wii runs in PAL60.Same for most NTSC games on my PAL 7502 PS1.Only my PAL 39003 PS2 runs games in their desired video mode (NTSC for US/JP games,PAL-BG for EU games)but I have GSM as a workaround. Also,90001 is automatically NTSC as it ends with region 1.(01)
Here's some news. Seems like the whole laser part is busted... Does anybody know if you can mod it to run games by a HDD without using a disk?
^^ (summat about 'not in a position to place links yet, crap post count! cool!) web search for 'hdcombo' and you'll get some hits! (professional only territory, AND reassuringly expensive!) there's a professional console modder by the name of 'jinn' (web again) and he done his own hdcombo variant, integrating various parts for the same effect as a chunky ps2! (used to sell them last i recall, but get your wallet out! if you can acquire a hdcombo unit online, serious electronic skills needed there) ... if you want a cost-effective fallback, get a chunky ps2, rj45/lan-ide hdd card and compatible ide hdd THEN.... a prepped 8m mc for 'freemcboot' and you're gold! (or hddboot/OSDSYS if you want that? pretty good really) ..... all the best! ..... [edit] typo...
For slims, it's best to use network shares for streaming the games to your homebrew game loader of choice. OPL is best these days
Thanks for everybody! My decision will be modding the PS2 to be based-off a HDD. I'll be creating another post for this part.
