None have been mentioned up to this point, excluding Ikaruga of course ^_^ But I agree. That's just too easy... and all the Naomi shooters/fighters on Dreamcast were pretty much perfect anyway, so there's no need to mention them. @jp. I didn't know there was an essential lack of slowdown in the Saturn version, it always felt right to me plus there aren't many places where slowdowns would be beneficial. But as said, I have no comparison. @topic Another excellent port is Gradius 1 for the PC-Engine. I love the Gradius series and have played Gradius 1 in every version available except for some obscure PC's of the time (like PC-8801, C64) and the PC-Engine version is not only technically the best (except for X68000) but also in terms of content. There are great bonus stages that add a lot of fun to the highscore hunt as well as a bonus stage that's exclusive to the PCE-version. Although I have to say that I still prefer the feeling and sound of the original arcade-version.
IIRC when Deep Purple (first boss) shoots the helix of bullets at you in the arcade original this made the game slow to a crawl, but in the Saturn version I don't think there is ever any slowdown in the game until like, loop 3 of Special Version.
Virtua Racing: you got a game that ran on a experimental 3D system that was more expensive than a car in a already 5 yr old 16bit console. The graphics even if not as detailed as the arcade ran smoothly, and overall I say it was the equivalent of getting VF3 ported to the Saturn.
Doom 32X, It looked better than SNES (imo) Was smoother, and had freaking awesome FM synth music.. plus, it ended in a C:\ prompt.
The only port of Doom back in the day that didn't have major issues was the PSX port. Can't remember all the problems with the 32X port but I know it was missing a lot of levels and is generally considered to be a bit shit.
Super Street Fighter II X on the dreamcast, the fact it had a dip switch option was pretty cool. With a few tweaks it could have been perfect.
Please, just don't go there! I would have named Sega Rally on the Saturn as my favourite console port (even though it's technically a conversion...) until Soul Calibur was mentioned - carrying on with such a thread now seems a little pointless. Can we declare Namco's incredible Dreamcast effort the undisputed winner already?
I recently got Virtual Racer for Genesis, 32x, and Saturn. Its fun playing them in that order. I for one really like all 3 versions.
Pratically every single Namco arcade game ported to the PS1: Starblade, CyberSled, Ridge Racer, Tekken (1,2,3), Soul Edge, Time Crisis, Xevious 3D/G, Air Combat, Libero Grande, Mr. Driller, ... Tekken 5 on the PS2. Not only they ported it brillianty, added lots of custom modes, but also included the full arcade versions of Tekken, Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, perfectly emulated. Not enough? How about Starblade arcade as well? Namco at it's best. Out Run 2006 Coast to Coast on the PS2. This game used to run on the Chihiro board, based on the Xbox but with 512mb RAM. It's such a technical achievement that this game runs on the PS2.
I have to agree that the PlayStation 2 version of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast deserves at least an honourble mention - Sumo Digital achieved a small miracle getting this one running on such an underpowered system compared with the Chihiro board and its far superior memory. Furthermore, they managed it without any really obvious compromises (unless you're looking rather carefully!), but who takes the time to notice such things when the game runs so quickly with only minor slowdown present? Come to think of it, I may be forced to reconsider my earlier suggestion for Soul Calibur based on purely technical grounds now...
Speaking of underpowered system, QuakeII was quite good on the PS1. The little I played of it impressed me, even with the PS1 shortcomings.
Yeah, like proper resolution... a very easy tweak, but total facepalm for not having. = fail Definitely not (but it is a great port).
The script still sucks just as much. Half of the dialogue in the game is horrendously written. In both english versions. And People speaking Japanese in China is hardly makes more sense.
Gauntlet IV for the gen was arcade perfect (it even had the voice over to it. LOL) and the added bonus game in it as well. Another great I think is After Burner II for the 32x. =Hugh
Think they did a few of the Sega Ages games on the Saturn... Fantasy Zone II... maybe they were the M2 of their day.
Pretty easy to make a good port when you've got a more powerful system than the original Sega Rally on Saturn was great, just compare that to the original Daytona port to see much better that could've been (technically, that is). VF2 was also a great port, too bad Sega Rally 2 and VF3TB were probably the worst arcade ports on DC.
I don't really think the Dreamcast ports of Virtua Fighter 3tb and Sega Rally 2 deserve to be in the same sentance tbh. Virtua Fighter 3tb may not have been arcade perfect, and may have sported a lower polygon count than the arcade version, but it didn't look a million miles away, and was also 60fps. By comparison, Sega Rally 2 was a lazy port of the Windows version, running at 30fps and was generally a mess.
