It just runs dece at best, hope yellowdog is more ps3 optimized, short vid of fceu on ps3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIWwcGCI_nY
ive spent more time inside linux on ps3 than actually playing it. Sony launched with 0 must have games (resistance is mediocre especially with Gears out)
We already know that you cant do 3D from the linux side (although whether its Sony or NVIDIA thats saying "No 3D for PS3 linux" I dont know, if its NVIDIA, maybe they can release a binary driver like they do for X86). What I am curious about is the performance of the framebuffer. If its fast enough for high definition video, I can see it being a great "Media Player" (a nice port of mplayer/ffmpeg and you could even play Windows Media files with it). Combine it with either a USB tv capture device (and matching driver for PS3 linux) or alternativly a tv capture device in another machine feeding video over the PS3s built-in ethernet port and it would make a killer PVR. I wouldnt be surprised to find that sony have done something to PS3 linux (or more specifically to the operating environment) to make such uses of PS3 harder (crippled the framerate or resolutions that PS3 linux can output at perhaps?)
Of course, for $600 you can already put together a pretty killer PVR and still have plenty of money left over. And you won't need any extra hardware. PS3 as PVR is spending more time and effort than needed to get a less than elegant solution. -hl718
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. No offense to the tinkerers out there, I enjoy it just as much as anyone else. But reasons for running linux or a pvr on a gameconsole is beyond my comprehension. I have to say that I am completley suprised that PS3 can run regular distros.
google is your friend (here's one page google found: http://www.ps3hacks.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=51&mode=&order=0&thold=0) edit: did a little check on it before I went to my parents house yesterday. the otheros.bld is a compressed file. just rename it to gz and you can extract the real bootloader. don't know why it's compressed if there is some size limits or something. did a little googling to find out more about kboot (http://kboot.sourceforge.net/). but for now I'm more intressted to find out how to write my own bootloader/kernel for it. havn't found any info on it yet. guess I have to go through the cell manuals when I get home from london ^^
I downloaded an ISO file called CELL-Linux-CL_20061110-SRCCD.iso from somewhere. Inside it is a file called kboot-20061110.tar.bz2. Inside that file is a bunch of source code and other things to what looks like the kboot bootloader. However, inside this .tar.bz2 file is a readme file which says this: 1. Build Environment Hardware Debugging Station Software Linux for PLAYSTATION(R) 2006/11/10 I suspect that what it means is that you need something special from Sony in order to rebuild the bootloader in a way that the "other OS installer" will be able to use.
