Ever since Google started implementing Google Fiber for residential areas in most of the cities they planned to roll it out to, it seems like it forced Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T to step up their game. I have even seen smaller, Regional Internet providers provide fiber optics in a few rural areas of the mid-west. I think all of this new fibre layout is a domino effect from Google trying to layout fibre to major cities around the states, which is nice for consumers.

I mention this because of all the AT&T fibre commercials lately, potraying them as the biggest and best fibre provider there is (their customer service is comcast levels of bad and they only have fiber in a handful of cities for homes). I think it's perplexing. I don't think they are fooling anyone into buying their service (i think others would flock to FIOS instead) and the rural areas that are trapped with their service don't have fiber capabilities. Who are they trying to play to? Who are they trying to win over? AT&T was the one to halt Google's progress in several cities and has proved shoddy buisness practices in the past. It just confuses me that AT&T is acting the savior as they have actively been the obstacle to the public for a century.

if it's anything like Australia's fiber network, it's government controlled, meaning this whole fiber rollout was probably planned a long time ago.

For AT&T i would say that is true, as the government has given them multiple multimillion payouts to build broadband infrastructure to which they did not deliver and then had the audacity to ask for more. But in Google's case, It is a company having to build infrastructure with it's own funds.

Where I live, it is possible to get 10,000 Mbps to your home, and that's 10,000 Mbps Download/Upload.

Meanwhile, just 10 miles north, there is only Charter/AT&T which can't offer anything close to it.

Fibre is EVERYWHERE - but you can't use it.

Well, you can. I helped a local radio station spec out a fiber run to their studio. Under a highway, two blocks of travel. They wanted more than the little studio makes in a year to just run the line.

I remember years ago WoodysGamertag made a video talking about his thoughts over Google Fiber and said something along the lines of "They're trying to be the first ISP that doesn't suck." which I think is the case with what he explained and what you touched up on.

Google Fiber will not be nationwide anytime soon. Would it be awesome if it was? Absolutely! However they know that's going to take much too long, so what they can do is at least start pushing out a cheap and awesome service to big cities and have other ISPs start to get in shape in order to properly compete with Google. Even now in areas that either have Google Fiber or will be receiving it users are getting a ton of mail and offers from competing ISPs that are using sneaky wording and methods to entice people.

In an area with Google Fiber? You'll be receiving a good amount of mysterious, mostly unmarked mail that claims to be time sensitive. Rip that sucker open and you'll be greeted with an unbeatable offer from [INSERT COMPETING ISP NAME HERE]

In an area that will have Google Fiber soon? You'll be receiving a good amount of mail from ISPs offering their new, improved, cheaper services and why they're a better deal than Google Fiber. Most of the time these are still slow as well (could be 30 Mbps for example) but the point is they're going to push that their $30 service is cheaper than Google's $70 gigabit service.

Almost forgot to mention AT&T - They can claim to have fiber optics, technically they do but it isn't terminated right up to your apartment or house like Google Fiber is. They do have fiber in their network, but you won't be getting those nice fiber optic speeds anytime soon, if ever. What they're doing is almost like Burger King marketing a Whopper as a salad because it has some lettuce and tomato slices in it.

AT&T sucks. They way overcharge and when they have competition and are forced to offer 70$ gigabit fiber they still have a data cap unless you pay 30$ extra and allow them to monitor all your internet usage

As the son of a AT&T U-Verse technician (one of the top 150 in the southeast US), I have asked my dad several questions about fiber. I am seeing some misinformation here. Fiber to the house is available in areas where fiber service is offered. The speeds of these areas is whatever they cap it out at. If you can't get fiber in your area, you get copper to the house instead and your speeds depend on how far you are from the fiber terminal.

As for the customer service, ask for a service rep in the US. You will be transferred to one and you'll find it to be much better. As for the pricing, work for U-Verse! You get up to 50% off (it increases and maxes out at 50% over the time you stay) on U-Verse and you can even get big discounts in the AT&T Stores (smartphones for 50% anyone?). In addition you can get DirecTV for $10/month.

One more thing, I have never heard of that "monitoring all your internet usage" crap. That sounds like conspiracy theory garbage. Anyhow, if you have any questions about U-Verse, DirecTV, or AT&T's Fiber service, let me know as I could relay it to my dad and he can probably answer your question. He is certified in all of those things.

Oh and one more thing I promise! DO NOT LISTEN TO THE DOOR TO DOOR SALESMEN. They tend to not know what they are talking about sometimes... (not saying all are bad but the ones in our area give out misinformation a lot).

Fuck AT&T/Uverse, Verzion/Fios, Comcast/Xfinity. Their policy's go against net neutrality and want to restrict us with datacaps.

True, Businesses have had access to fiber networks longer than consumers have. We are now just seeing a big rollout due to Google pushing for it.

Also pretty true when concerning Google glass and the Google watches, but so far they have been pushing for upgraded infrastructure pretty hard so far.
