So it recently occurred to me that I've never played Fighting Vipers 2, and I probably should. I liked the first Fighting Vipers game for the Saturn a lot. So my question, for those who've played it: is the DC version of the sequel any good? Did they botch the conversion in the same way they botched VF3? How does it compare to the original Fighting Vipers game? It appears that it was only released in Europe and Japan, and looking at eBay it's rather pricey. Of course there are DC games that go for a lot more, but it seems a bit much. Did it have a limited release or something?
I've got a mint one for sale Personally I liker the first game more. As for how good the DC conversion is, well I can't say because I don't remember much about the arcade.
I only played FV2 a couple of times, but my memory is that it was a little slower than the original game. Obviously, the graphics were better, and given that the arcade console was a Naomi console I'd expect that the arcade conversion would have been flawless. My bet is that you're not missing anything for not having played it. My interest was always in the story. I remember seeing fan art for the first game that seemed to suggest that one of the characters didn't survive the first game, and so I was surprised to see that character show up in the sequel.
As someone who feels that Fighters Megamix is the greatest 3D fighter ever made, I must say that I loved FV2. I haven't played it in ages, but I do remember enjoying the hell out of it back when I got it.
Speaking for Fighters Megamix (which sadly I only played a little on a videogames exhibition) I wonder how comes it didn't came out on PS2 via SegaAges. I would love to see in on XBLA (yeah, I'm dreaming too much).
I didn't know that. You'd think that the conversion would have been completely flawless then, given how well VF3 was presented. About Megamix, would there have been any problems with including the Sonic and Virtua Cop characters in any theoretical re-release? I know it's all technically Sega properties, but that doesn't mean there aren't internal usage agreements that could make that problematic.
I'm fairly certain that licensing issues are to blame for the non-reissuing of Fighters Megamix to a degree, but quite what the problems might be I don't actually know for sure. The featured elements from Daytona USA could present a problem on the scale of Sega Racing Classic, though I don't ever recall the contended D-word ever being mentioned so perhaps that's not what's preventing a new version from happening. What I can be sure of is that back in the day Sonic Team didn't want their characters being used, so AM2 was forced instead to include just the new designs it created in-house (Bark and Bean) originally for Sonic The Fighters. In fact, wasn't the objection to Sega's mascot and his friends appearing in a combat title the main reason why STF was cancelled in its Saturn guise? From what I can remember, a conversion was completed - and even scheduled for release in mid '98 - only to then disappear with no explanation ever given officially. I've read before that similar concerns also led to the coin-op not being made available in Europe, with the few arcade machines seen over here imported by shrewd operators without Sega's consent. Anyway, I'm geading way off-topic now... at least I haven't mentioned a certain other AM2 game converted to the Dreamcast from Model 3 via NAOMI by Genki for once!
