You know how everyone says that E3 was meant to be a trade show and not a giant convention for the public, and how "it wasn't meant for gamers?" I think they are very wrong, if this is the final result. What is the point anymore? In essence, the true point behind E3 was a milestone; a time a year when things can be first introduced and revealed, generating peoples first look into the game. To say that it is meant for the developers is pure bullshit: a good majority of it was for people to find out about what was available, and what wasn't. I don't know, it just feels more extreme then a toned down version, like the people in charge didn't know what the fuck they were thinking by downsizing it. Many did not show up, and the companies that did had very little effort into presenting anything. I don't know, I just think that the change was a bad one, and that they were trying to kill it off more then scale it down.
I think in terms of purpose it works better. It's good that it is less of a circus. Why waste such huge amounts of money when the cost of games development is increasing but prices are staying the same? I'd rather that went into gaming than a few bimbos with rubber lips and rubber tits exciting a bunch of Geeks. The US gaming press is bought and sold anyway. Devs and publishers don't need that BS to conduct business. It is also something that the games industry is trying to move away from.
Old E3 was broken. New E3 was a total disaster. From what I kept hearing, the group that managed E3 this year is not the same who did it in previous years. I think E3 is dead unless it goes back to the old format but fixes its issue. The death of E3 will put a strain on other shows which was quite noticablt this year but will end up worse next year (refering to CES & GDC). As it stands, most of the industry does not care to deal with E3 next year if it's the same.
Honestly I cant believe it is over: like, the past ones were mindblowing in most cases (cuz there were some crappy ones) yet this one is like "its that all?". My opinion? we need something like the TGS, a show that the average joe can go to and not only jerks who call themselves "journalists" just becos they write in some small mag or site. I think that with this crappy E3, alternative conventions like PAX will grow stronger. Developers have the GDC, nuff said...
I think the changes may be positive. The press can get a lot more time talking to developers and playing the games this way. Instead of waiting almost two hours in line to play a game, they have a lot more time to plan stuff. This will all hopefully result in better coverage of the show
Matt. C of IGN commented that he had to wait, on occasion, an hour to play certain games in past E3s. E3 is supposed to be for the press, anyhow... This new revision allows them to do their job easier. Relax, the E for All Expo in October is where the PUBLIC will finally be able to get in on it for the first time. (Matt C. also commented that driving around in Santa Monica to different hotels was blue balling and that he'd prefer the event in one centralized location instead. He even pitched in this idea: Why not have an E3 MONTH? Devote a day or two to specific publishers. That's his ideal solution.)
Why not have seperate arenas\sections for the press and others for the public? For many people E3 is the closest they're ever gonna get to heaven, why take it away from them? Plus no new Sega console, so it was meh
An E3 month would be terrible. Most people in the industry have trouble devoting a week to this thing, let alone a month! IGN aren't pushed for print material one would assume. ;-)
ign think too highly of themselves. Matt C. thinks he's nintendo God when it comes to having connections etc. Fair enough, the guy's deep in, but at the end, he's just another gamer - no dev experience, no technical expertise, and no understanding of Law or economics.
I'm sure TGS will deliver this year what E3 didn't. Also Microsofts own event is where I think they will show the games what people wanted at E3 Banjo etc. I must admit there was some really good things at this years E3 Mgs 4 trailer, Killzone 2 etc but it seem to be lacking lots of big games. I was kinda disappointed in a way but I will have to see what TGS offers what E3 didn't.
Agreed. To be honest, I always thought that E3 and they way that people acted in and around it was an embarrassment to the industry. I (as well as others) would have preferred that they would have scrapped it completely as the name itself will always be a remind of what was and what will never be again.
