Surely. If it was fully backwards compatible (ie system on a chip) they'd be touting that instead. Rather they're going to work on a few key titles it seems.

This bit's kind of interesting though:
Well yes, but that's because the PS3 isn't due out for over a year and the Xbox 360 will be out before Christmas. They're working on different time scales so naturally the level of hype for the earlier machine will be higher. It remains to be seen whether anyone will actually buy the Xbox 360 on launch, or whether they'll wait for the PS3, which by then will most certainly be in full hype mode.

Possibly, how else can you chose which game are compatible?

Right. Watch the press conference, that is verbatim what one of the MIcrosoft Tools said. It's pretty close to the beginning too. I guess Forbes didn't want to misquote.

I think to really suck the life out of the Playstation, they're going to need more than XI... XIII would be a striking blow I think, but I'm sure Square won't commit to anything just yet.

The backward compat is probably going to be done using XBOX live patches, I think, therefore not all games will be compatible. Emulating is a lot easier when you can change the software you're emulating

    Sort of like Bleem.
Meh, I'm not a fan of backwards compatibility anyway.
I buy new hardware to play NEW games.

There is absolutely, positively, no farkin' way that Square will take the mainline Final Fantasy franchise away from Sony.

Final Fantasy means too much to their Japanese sales, and the Japanese market does NOT like the Xbox, and will likely not like the Xbox 360 either. Square'd have to be crazy to put FFXII or FFXIII on Xbox 360 exclusively, and Sony will demand either PS3 exclusive or nothing at all, and Square WILL heed that demand.

Some Final Fantasy (VII and the new MMORPG one) games have appeared on the PC. I think the days of the Playstation being the sole FF console target are waning. Of course, not that it matters to me as I'm not a fan of the games to begin with. ;)

I said the mainline franchise, FFXI doesn't count, neither does Crystal Chronicles, or Tactics, or whatever.

It naturally makes sense to put FFXI on as many platforms as possible, as MMORPG's thrive on users, and the more users the game has, the more user fees Square is going to get.

FFVII on the PC hardly counts. The PC is STILL not really a competitor to the consoles, it's a different market with wildly different price points. Sony didn't CARE about the PC version because they knew it wouldn't really eat into their PS1 game sales substantially.

Sony knows that their grip on the mainline FF franchise is a real key to their success. Like it or not, FFVII made the Playstation number 1, and Sony is very aware of that, they are not about to give that up.

The fact that you HAVE to purchase a Playstation (or PS2, and probably a PS3) to play the main-line Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest/Warrior games is the core reason why their consoles succeed. The Japanese demand for those games is just too large, and won't ever go away.

Wasn't this game a dissapointment though? I might get it but if they charge extra fees :no

    They do charge fees.

It IS worth the price, reason I stopped playing was the time committment. Like any MMORPG, FFXI is a huge time sucker, and I just don't have enough time to dedicate to it.

It's a hugely entertaining game though. I remember just playing hide and seek with other players for hours on end before even really starting the game proper.

Is there any crime in getting rid of huge and clunky hardware in the process?

Seems like FFVII is going to be remade for PS3.

"Please look out for more Final Fantasy games on PlayStation 3."

It would be a very smart thing to do IMO, they'd sell millions and millions of units again.

I just don't see why Microsoft doesn't just give Square/Enix a huge wad of cash and make FF exclusive, same goes for Metal Gear, Gundam, and whatever else sells big in Japan. Hell it's playing dirty, but it's playing to win for sure.

On the conference they said it was just a tech demo and there's no plans (yet) to do it.

I don't see why they need to actually remake the game.

I'd much rather just see FFXIII show up somewhere close to launch.

I can't wait for XII, it seems like forever since I've had a mainline single-player FF game to tear through. Not since college.

    What Johnny said. :)

Didn't Iwata say that Square is making an "online Final Fantasy game" for the Revolution?

Actualy, Square said that they were going to re-make FF 7/8/9 for PS2 at some point. Some time afterwords (think 6 months to 1 year) they stated that they were going to be releasing them as seperate games as opposed to a compilation, and would be remaking the cinematics for 7 and 8 only, due to ff9 still being relativly new. Thats the last anyone heard of the remakes.

Also, in response to FF7 and FF11 being on PC, I'd like to add that FF8 was as well. Other then 11 though none of them sold very well though. FFCC was only made becuase of Nintendo offering to pay for its development, and 11 is comming to XBox360 because Live! is currently the best console online service. I don't forsee the main franchise leaving Sonys consoles.
