Interesting. So it requires a startup disc to load the main menu? Why would they make it like that, anyway? And does it do anything else weird? Also, is that TV a 32LH30?
The reason behind the startup-disc is plain simple. BigN was in a hurry to release the Wii and the system-menu hasn´t been installed on the systems, so they made the startup-disc and the buyer just needed to insert the disc on power-up of the Wii. The disc installed the system-menu and some other stuff, ios and the likes. The Wii´s with startup-disc needed, behave like any other Wii, when the system-menu is installed
So were they avaliable like this at retail? Because I got my US machine on launch and it had the system menu preinstalled.
I know the Wii I got day 1 (I was #11 in line at the Target on my end of town) had it fully installed when I booted it up. Though I know some boxes said they came with a start-up disc and Nintendo fully denied such a thing existed.
Weren't the ones that needed a startup disc kiosk displays? Basically The N had to rush them out to be displayed at stores without a menu system flashed onto them.
The interesting thing is the menu is animated. I will make some video. It also tries to load off disc, does anyone have a system update ripped from a retail disc?
Wasn't Bushing trying to attain a NAND dump from a 'please insert start up disc' system? edit: nevermind he did eventually get to mess with one - http://hackmii.com/2010/09/insert-startup-disc/ the startup disc was mentioned on pre-release Wii packaging as I recall? or maybe it's on the retail packaging too and was covered up with a sticker?
Thats an amazing item, I wonder if this particular wii was from the factory floor of launch units that didn't get the system loaded into it, or was it actually a wii issued "into the wild" on store shelves? APE said that some boxes actually indicated "start up disc included", anyone have a pic of one of these?
