Finally got to watch the original hong kong version of rumble in the bronx with english subs, omg it's amazing how much better it is than the dubbed US/UK version. Pacing, dialouge, and editing miles better. Movie makes a lot more sense, including little details they cut out of the international version such as Jackies character being cop, or little moments here and there that add more humor and drama (such as elaine slapping Chan for dating the gang leaders gf and not being there to defend the store). Bottle scene a lot more dramatic as well. Only thing international version has over original is music. Such a shame this version never got a world wide release. Apparently only dvds available with the original cut are the chinese and japanese version, though they lack english subtitles. There was a dvd taiwan release with english sub but hear from some sources that it uses a different dub and that the video quality is a bit lacking. Well if you can find this version it's worth it!
The version of Rumble in the Brox. I have has the scene where Jackie gets slapped. I thought that was the standard movie. Mine is subtitled too in parts however most of it is in English. Mine is on VHS from years ago and simply called Rumble in the Brox.
I have a few Jackie movies in their original HK form, Police Story 1 and 2, Wheels on Meals and Both Armour or Gods
There were later edits that inserted a little bit of footage back in, but the original version only the kid in the wheel chair and people living in america speak english. Everyone else speaks catonese. The scene where she slaps him plays out a bit more dramatic in the original version compared to the slightly toned down international version. Basically clipping here and there. With the international cut they got most of the translation correct, but cut out scenes entirely or altered details to the movie that I guess they didn't feel were irrelevant. Like in the opening it goes more into detail about selling the store and him mentioning that he is a cop from hong kong and he is there to help with the sale of the store and that he wonders if he would stay in the U.S. and become a citizen and continue to run the store, to which he replys no and that he likes hong kong so his uncle tells him he will sell the store then, to which he replies your my uncle it's your decision. Wedding scene more details about the sale of the store. Garage chase scene happens cause they try to steal from her again and Chan stops two of them, but rest of gang shows up and being overwhelmed runs outside to call the cops which causes them to chase him. It's just little details here and there. Also another thing lost in the translation is how most everybody who is speaking catonese can't be understood by people who only speak english, ie when the people are amazed in the store about Chan's kung fu and the clerk asks how he does it and just explains it in catonees to elaine, when she responds to them she says in english she will tell them later after being amazed by his ability. In fact in original cut the store gets attacked more after she buys it from his uncle. Great scene where she tries to stand up to guys asking for protection money like chan told her, but gets socked super hard in the face and immediately re-rises with broken glasses. I could see that being cut for being a bit too extreme. I could go on for hours about the details you just have to watch the original and compare. Imdb list some of the major cuts as well. As for where to find it, don't think the rules allow to specify where all I can say is that I watched it streaming and I will leave it at that Just a shame this version will never get a Western release.
That sounds identical to the version I have on VHS. I guess mine is the Hong Kong original then. It always struck me funny why some of the white guys spoke in Cantonese. Isn't the scene where the feed the guy in to the wood chipper more graphic as well in this release? I'm sure I was talking about the scene with a friend and he said his version was different.
I hallucinated when I went and saw this in the theatre. It was fucking awesome... I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.
Don't forget that the International version has new scenes as well, though! Not that they make up for 17 minutes of cuts! And you don't get Kung Fu by Ash at the end lol. I believe the UK home video release was further cut to make it a 15, too. By the way, that scene you mentioned explaining the chase to the garage was put back in the US cable version, apparently. Oh, and you won't get the original film on DVD. The Warner Hong Kong release has the New Line Cinema international edit and the Warner Japan release is cropped to 1.85:1. If you don't care about the dialogue, get the Funny release from Taiwan - it has a Mandarin dub and English subtitles, in 2.35:1. The best unaltered release is probably the Warner Hong Kong Video CD.
I looked into that vcd problem is I read its hard to find now and has chinese subs ontop of the english ones hard encoded. Plus the video quality I hear is shit. The woodchipper scene there is more footage of them reacting afterward vomiting a bit more. I think the international version showed his remains spitting a little out don't remember atm. The original hk version again had the american characters speaking english and the chinese people speaking catonese, only english when speaking to the american characters, which I liked cause it gave the movie a bit more realism. I will say for the blooper reel in the international version is better cause they cleaned up the footage and had that kick ass song by ash called "kung fu". Original hong kong version has this lame song with jackie chan doing some vocals and the credits scroll over the blooper reel which is full screen but looks real washed out(like it hadn't been processed or color corrected). I found it odd they re-dubbed the english voices considering the original actors weren't bad. Guess this might of been done to keep consistency with the audio? Blu ray recently came out in europe but sadly still international version and region locked. Anyone feel like starting a petition to Criterion to release the original international version with english subs lol?
