I really didn't like the jump from 2 to 3.....seems to be a bit bloated now....hopefully they'll take it in the other direction.
I'm using Firefox 4 since beta 1 and I must say I'm mostly happy with it (the only thing I don't like is the lack of a status bar). I just updated to beta 8 and at least in my computers I noticed an important speed increase, they have been doing a great work speeding up the browser lately.
Using it right now. While I do like a lot of it, I have major trouble with some add-on specific problems: 1) No Gmail Checker works with it the way it should 2) Stumbleupon - I get the stumbles my friends send me, but the messages they send with them do not appear anywhere. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing.
I've made the jump from 3 to 4, but I do miss the status bar and dislike where the refresh button has gone. Regardless, I've noticed it's a lot more faster
Remember many addons don't work with beta releases (few addon makers put effort in making addon releases that may not work with the next beta), expect most of them to be fixed when the final version comes out.
Does it load (as in start up, not download) faster, too? I'm currently in the market for a new browser, since Opera's gotten really bloated, but so far FF has always been fatter (but O's really close now)... And since I start over with a "fresh" browser instance very often, load times are an issue for me.
Son of a ******************** When i dl and installed this morning it was beta 7. Now it's Beta 8 (just switched my home pc to FF 4). For me it does. It launches pretty quick. I think my only 2 issues to check is how long it takes to shutdown & memory usage. I found FF 3 was pretty wasteful on memory (like even if you close a bunch tabs it still will retain a large pool of memory). As for why shutdown matters, sometimes when you install apps that force a restart of firefox it takes quite a while to fully close.
Yes that's one of the big problems with FF. Load a couple of tabs and watch a few YouTube videos, you'll soon end up with FF eating upto 800MB. I still run 3, but I used the minimize trick so that all the memory used is released when you minimize the browser. Read more about it >>here<< I still find restarting the browser is still required on occasion. As for FF itself, it's a pretty decent browser. Never had any real issues with it (unlike IE8), and the add-on catalogue is really quite impressive. Crash recovery is also good.
Sounds promissing but for me Firefox is all about he plug-ins so Ill wait for the final version or the RC
Seems ok, they've stolen the style from Google Chrome a little and the lack of a status bar pisses me off. I still use Safari religiously but I may just make the switch to Firefox 4 as it seems to handle flash video better on my netbook.
I have one major annoyance with FF4 so far. You can't double click on any open space on the tab bar to open a new tab. It's a minor item, since I found you can middle click, but a change I keep forgetting about since I've been used to something for several years.
I'm not fully sure but did they swap the order of "open link in new tab/open link in new window" ? For the first two days i kept opening stuff in a new window when I meant tab. =P
I just decided this week to give Chromium a fair chance, and so far, I'm pleased. Is FF4 more like that and less like... well... Firefox?
I used i used to do the same thing when i had Chrome as my main Browser and FF as my secondary but in this new release the New Tab and New window are in the same order as Chrome. Will be nice to see what i've missed have been a chrome only user for a while now.
The one thing I like about Chrom(ium) over Firefox is that the syncing is integrated into the browser. It's not a 3rd party plug. Privacy shit all set aside, I was using Foxmarks/Xmarks for a while now and loved it. It's gotten wonky and now changed hands so I'm a bit weary.
I've been incredibly happy with Chrome, it's nice and fast. Extensions update w/o browser restarts, they update autmagically in the background. It does actually release RAM when tabs close. I mean really what's not to like?
I realy used Firefox and not Chrome just because of Stumbleupon not working on Chrome. Now it does, so I might try it for a while.
