Anyone been to these before? I got a hankering to get my value's worth from my camera, so was thinking of going down there. The tickets for a seat are 5250 which seems rather pricey to me. Anyone know how crowded the surrounding areas are? Was thinking of going and setting up at the gym nearby to take photos. I know of a building that doesn't lock their fire escape but I assume the tenants will be up there. Might now work.

There's apparently one in Sumida-ku and Daitou-ku at the end of the month that's about double the size. I'm not familiar w/ that area AT ALL though.

I will be going to the one over Kamon walf between Honshu and Kyushu this weekend. Lasts for about an hour and is always a spectacular sight. I doubt I'll take any pictures though. I can't be arsed. Maybe the video camera will pop out for some HD goodness.

I went to the one in Katsushika-ku last night. It was far, and packed. Fireworks were okay, but nothing too crazy. All in all, not worth the trip, especially since about 30,000 yen fell out of my fucking pocket. (Facepalm). I should have ridden my bike, but 23k w/ a tripod is not easy. Even though it's a small tripod.

The Meiji Jingu show would be ideal (w/ a good seat) but I'm not going to make that. Next "huge" one is in Sumida-ku in October. Might try that one out. Weather should be outstanding.

Since fireworks are quite rare ware this season (due to the touhoku disasters), I probably will only go to the Kanagawa shinbun hanabitaikai as every year.

How is it for taking photographs? I think if you want really good ones it's likely best to just buck up and buy a seat. But, what the fuck do I know?

These are few lucky shots I took with my DSLR and long exposure at the last year kanagawa shinbun hanabitaikai:

I do not know if they have seats to buy or such things there, didn't see any so far. We usually go there before noon and cover a nice place with blue sheets (if there still are some). Most maniacs do this already the day before or very early in the morning. Anyway since you have lots of entertainment at Minato Mirai, you have no probs with killing your time till the show goes off.

Ah, so you're one of those reserve a place then piss off people ? Wouldn't do any good if i came along. I always move the mat or whatever if there is no one there. Maybe it's a British thing but we are not the biggest lovers of that sort of action.

It is how it is here, and I appreciate those kind of things that people actually respect others (same thing with the queueing).
Probably wouldn't be possible in ANY other country on this planet.
And it is not piss of people since everyone does it like this and it's how it's accepted by everyone. It only would piss of people if you move it away and use it instead of those who came first.

Actually, Germans put their towels on the beach chairs or chairs around the pool early in the morning then bugger off to eat breakfast. It's something British ALWAYS complain about  I guess we're more of a use something when you're there type of race.

That's how hanami is done in Yoyogi park. On the Saturday/Sunday when they're in full bloom, there are blue tarps everywhere, all day.

When is the one you're going to? Maybe I can ahem... reserve a spot on your tarp? It would be worth a conbini bag full of Chuhi. :) Too far for me to go at noon then come back.

Nice pics, btw. Mine didn't turn out so nice but I got a few keepers. For one, they was a lot of "overlap" and if you have the exposure on too long it just turns into a mess.

    EDIT:
I'd love to go to the Sumida-ku one but I hear it's just a disaster. 20,000 fireworks, so it's triple the size of the Kanagawa one. But I hear people go get the good seats days before. :(

Does this work if I drape a profallactic over a woman's genitals too?
    Germany is awesome!

    Hi GP,

here are the details of the Kanagawa Shinbun Hanabitaikai 2011. It is set on August 17th (水), from 19:00 on.

    http://hanabi.kanaloco.jp/index.html

I am planning to go there with some friends. May be hanging around the Rinkou Park from noon on.

    They also have reserved seats:

    料金大人(高校生以上)2000円
    子ども(小中学生)500円 ※小学生未満は無料

I also went to the Sumida hanabi few years ago. It was nice and may have like 20'000 shots, but it is not very big in terms of the size of the bangers itself, since people are very near to the launchers and also because it is in middle of a big city.

Ah, cool. Might go out to Kanagawa then. 2000 reserved isn't bad.

    It's inside the obon-holiday ;)

I just gave out wrong informations. This year it is mandatory to reserve. It wasn't like that in all the previous years I went there. Guess it's because the Tohoku desaster and being the only hanabitaikai in Yokohama this year.
So expect even more people than in all the previous years.

Good thing, noone can go plaster the grounds before 13:00 same day. But I can see a long long snake at the entry.
