Fixing Restoring the game gear need help

When it comes to the game gear i am a noob really never owned one as a child but i seem to have 3 or 4 all with the same problem. Faint picture, can only be seen when you tilt the console away from you also they have faint to no sound.
Is there a guide anywhere that will help me trouble shoot and maybe repair these classic consoles.
I have seen alot of people talk about the caps need replacing on them.
Also is there a mod for the screen like using L.E.D strips instead of the mini flo type light.

And there are mods for backlights but I've yet to find one that makes me think "damn this is a lot better".

 

Cheers guys for the reply's ive found a fair bit of info now ive refined my searches as google was playing silly buggers earlier.

 

I miss my Game Gear, I used to have the lot as well back in the day (magnifier, TV tuner, shit ton of games, carry case ect).

Mine developed a fault whereby there was a loud hum/buzz from the speaker, lines which ran down the screen and the d-pad seemed to be locked in the left position. Not sure what went on it to cause that, but I could just about still watch TV on it.

 

I just watched a youtube vid on replacing the caps so i could an idea of the inside boards and it looks like lots of fun

 

Interesting description - don't think I'd have called it that!

Change the caps, but leave the screen alone... the mods are pretty poor.

 

Ive checked a few pics and vids of led mods and they dont look any better than the original so im going to leave well alone.
