Is there some chart, formula, magical chant, etc out there that has a convienent way of determining what flash ICs (or other writable memory IC) are useful for replacing EPROMs? 1:1 drop in is always nice however it is clear that DIP is/has gone the way of the dinosaur with surface mount replacing it; building an adapter is not enough of a hassle when you compare the costs of a single EPROM to that of a piece of flash+PCB. However, I've noticed that after comparing datasheets more often than not an address line or two is missing on the flash IC of the same size EPROM. Having the same functions in a different pin order is no big deal with some rewiring but I think it'd be a bit more difficult to get around an entire address line or two being unavailable.
That is what I was thinking as well. I've long since closed the windows I had open but a 16mbit EPROM I was looking at had up to A19 and the same sized flash had only up to A18. Might not have been labeled the same so I may have overlooked it.
