Anyone know what the difference is between the MVP-1 and MVP-10 models of the FM Towns Car Marty are, as I can't find much information about them?

I noticed a Fujitsu Ten AV monitor next to said machines, I assume it was the screen for said item but again can't find more information about it.

I went to a Junk shop today and saw 4 of them together which was 4 more then all the Car Martys I ever saw.

My guess would be that the MVP-1 has the 386 chip and the MVP-10 has the 486 chip. The Car Marty was released in the same year as the FM Towns Marty 1 and it was marketed as a console that could play all of the Marty titles. Maybe when the Marty 2 came out they also released the MVP-10 with similar specs.

Either that or it was an attempt to reposition the Car Marty with a lowr price. The original was one of the most expensive consoles ever released, coming out in 1994 when the other "multimedia" game players were being released. Once they started to crash it's possible they changed the name, lowered the price, and remarketed it.

Both of those are just guesses on my part. If you look at the consoles they're similar to the changes between the Marty 1 and 2, that's to say they look exactly the same exceopt for a darker color. There inputs or design are identical between the two, except for the addition of "Multimedia Player" written on the MVP-10.

Really? I just checked the Japanese Wikipedia again and it says the Marty was February 1993 and the Car Marty was 1994 after appearing in late 1993 at an auto show.

  7. Does any know much about the insides of the Fujitsu Ten Car Marty MVP-1?

I bought one of these recently but the cd drive spits the disc out as soon as it's loaded.

Anybody know what the problem could be/anybody got any advise before I open it up and take a look.

Does anybody have a spare box for this machine and any rubber feet (Or know of any good replacements for the rubber feet?)

  8. Cheers for the reply matey! Yeah, bit of a bargin.

I'll try some nail varnish remover on the lense first then.

Any ideas where I can sourse a lense for this from, are they fairly generic?

  9. Cool, fingers crossed it's just misaligned at worse case scenario!

The disc that was supplied with the console was scratched up though so may just be the disc.

Tomorrow when I attempt cleaning the lense I'll attempt a different disc to see the results and failing all this, i'll take the console to my local shop so they can inspect it.

Thanks for all the help, I really appericate it!

Galine on here has a spare car marty he had for spares - though I think it might be the laser thats dead on his spare. Either way you might want to try giving him a PM on here (Though hes not on much) or I can send you his e-mail address.

  11. Very useful to know! Thanks buddy.

I'll send him a PM for now and give it a couple of days and see if I get a response.

  12. Just tried an audio cd and no luck.

However I bought some white spirits today and cleaned the laser. After cleaning the laser I tried an audio cd again without putting the outer casing on and notice the cd doesn't attempt to spin (It didn't spin previously either) Could it be something other than the laser?

  13. The motor could well be broken, The disk mounts ok "sometimes" but the fact that it doesn't spin would surely mean it could be the motor.

But I guess if the motor is duff, i'd still need a spare car marty to fix this one.

Oh well :) Better keep my eye out for one as Galine has recently sold is spare one :-(

  14. Yeah I tried the see if the disc can spin and it seems to. If I leave the cd mounted and power the machine on the machine just spits the cd out again.

    Slightly OT

I got a marty once that powered up fine but wouldn't spin the discs. I opened it and some switch had popped out, which I believe was to tell the system the cd lid was closed. Popped it back down, working marty. Hopefully it'll be a simple fix for you too!

I do have a spare car marty (right behind me as I type, used as a fancy paperweight). It was given to me years ago, untested, just a bare unit no leads etc. I've never bothered to power it up either. I'll try and look at it at the weekend, see if it works and get back to you.

  16. News I just wanted to here from both you guys thanks! :D

Any ideas on where the switch might be? Would I need to remove the four screws to expose the laser to find it.

Cheers for all the help guys, really appericate it.

Lads, I said Marty! Not car marty! Hence the OT reference. Given the car marty doesn't have a cd lid I doubt there's such a switch inside. I merely told the story as an example of an easy fix in the hope its something similar for you. And to cheer you up!

Anyway, I'll try and test my paperweight at the weekend see if it works. Or maybe I'll take it to bits out of curiosity (and make some piccies for infos sake).

  18. To eager for a fix is my problem - There maybe such a switch who knows.

    That would be cool

  19. Thanks for the effort matey
