    Hey Guys

I have a Fujitsu FM Towns II computer with the build-in monitor. The monitor stopped working a couple of days ago. The system seems to boot up fine, but the screen stays dark.

I realized this when I plugged a Sharp x68000 PC into the back of it and clicked on the external monitor setting. I wanted to use the FM Towns II internal monitor as the monitor for the x68000 that I was booting up.

The problem is that I hadn't touched my FM Towns II in about 2 years. I didn't boot it up before connecting the x68000, so I don't know if the problem existed before the hookup or if the problem existed because I hooked up the x68000.

Any tips? Has anyone heard of an x68000 blowing up a FM II monitor? Or perhaps the problem is something else?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Monitors do die, the first thing I would do is to check the fuses. I would assume that there would be some internal fuses so you'll have to open it up.

Yeah, I've opened it up.....just one fuse that I found....and it looks OK. I have to do some more digging....

Don't assume that just because the fuse looks okay that it is.. remove it (if possible) and use a resistance check to make sure it's okay. I've seen someone spend ages on an arcade machine trying to get it working, then I check all the fuses and replace the one that is bad, but looks okay...

Check to see if the monitor is getting power too (using the 500+ VAC setting of a multimeter). Without seeing the chassis it's hard to suggest anything. If the monitor is completely dead it's usually the power supply / isolation transfrormer part, fuse or flyback (this is hard to check as most multimeters aren't designed to do anything over 600V).

Also have you checked the electrolytic capacitors? They can go bad easily... Make sure none of them are bloated / expanded. They should look like sealed uniform tubes with shrink wrap around them that has the values on it.

It's going to be caps. Crts are near indestructible aside from the caps.
Caps dry out in 4-10 years.
