    Hi guys,

I'm getting a little worried with my TEST PS2's laser wearing out, so today I decided to put my network adapter to good use and start playing games from the HDD (would this even work? I'm not sure).

So I found a pre-patched ulaunchelf ISO on the board, burned it and it runs fine. I figured the next step would be putting Open PS2 Loader or HD Loader 8c on my memory card with FreeMCBoot, for maximum ease of use. I downloaded the "FMCB Noobie Package" which includes the installer and some apps, including said HD Loader 8c.

Running the FMCB install from USB using uLaunchelf works just fine. However, trying to install it to the MC always fails with "Failed to open DVDELF". There is indeed no DVDELF present in the noobie package (so the INSTALL\INJECT folder is empty), but I figured I wouldn't need any! The Noobie Package readme even says its optional.

So what do I do now? Just use a DVDELF.bin? Which one is appropriate for a TEST? I have a 220-240V NTSC model!

    Many thanks!

Okay, I did some googling (managed to access the psx-scene forum through the google cache, as it's "down for maintenance") and now I found a thread saying that apparently FMCB does not work on a TEST due to the lack of DVD playing capabilities in the firmware. Shucks.

I guess I'll just have to load HDL from USB through HDL to save my lens.

TEST PS2s of 1000x and 3000x series have some of the MAGIC GATE functionality disabled. This pertains to launching encrypted ELF (KELF) files mostly.

TEST PS2s of the 1010x and 3010x have working MAGIC GATE functionality but it won't take RETAIL KELFs anyway (it uses a different keys set for memory card encryption) and it seems it can only launch bootable files from the DTLH-10020 (hint: this is the same dongle card used on PS2 based arcade boards for the boot program ) special development memory card unit.

Btw I believe that the memory card driver does not allow for the DTLH-10020 to be used as an normal storage memory card as the DTLH-3010x does support SCPH-10020 memory cards just fine. On that PS2 the DTLH-10020 is used to boot an TSR real time debugger

This is the MAGIC GATE capable TEST unit:

Thanks for your reply. I guess it's not possible to launch FMCB on my TEST, so I decided to use it to install the Independence Exploit to a spare memory card and use that to boot uLaunchelf on my spare V3 PAL PS2. All in all, I got FMCB running in about five minutes! So now I'll just use this unit for most games to save my TEST the wear; if need be I can always launch Open PS2 Loader on the TEST with my uLaunchelf CD-R.

Edit: everything works like a dream! Now I'm off for a well-deserved swim :)
