No Game Gear love from me! I promise :encouragement: They'll be the first system to go if I need more space! Just gave Sonic Chaos and R-Type a go, Sonic Chaos feels like it is running in slow-mo. It feels like the physics are off compared to the Mega Drive Sonic games. R-Type isn't bad but lacks a wonderful story line like Zero Wing. Chase HQ2 - Special Criminal Investigation seems to have everything I want though. Fast cars, women and guns! I did accidentally try Sonic Chaos for Game Gear... Makes me appreciate the Master System version SO MUCH MORE.
Because the Master system in the USA and the Master system in PAL regions (which also included Australia and NZ) are two entirely different worlds. The US libary was only 100-odd games, the PAL library was roughly 300 games. The Wonderboy games, Golden Axe Warrior, Phantasy Star, Golvellius, Astérix, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Ghostbusters, Fantasy Zone 1 & 2, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic the Hedgehog, Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Robocop vs. Terminator, Micro Machines, Desert Strike, Gauntlet, Impossible Mission, James Pond 2, Kenseiden, Lemmings, Power Strike I & II, Rainbow Islands, Bubble Bobble..all are really great games but most of them were PAL only.
Do not ever say that again. Bubble Bobble on SMS is TERRIBLE. There is no background music. It just does not compare at all! (Although the Amiga version does come in close with the music, I can never forget the C64 version). I can't believe the SMS version was silent. It makes me so sad :sorrow:
I think people just cling pretty hard to what they had as a kid, because it's there when all this other amazing stuff's going on. It's hard to feel a connection to a console you didn't have, especially if you're not a collector like us. What I always notice is that the NES had a pretty drab colour palette when you look at it side-by-side with the Master System. If you compare, say, Super Mario Bros 3 with something like Wonder Boy 3, you see a sea of pale blue, pale green, and brown on the NES, next to all those vibrant reds, greens, blues, etc on the Master System. I think in most other aspects they're pretty well matched.
Bubble Bobble SMS does have bg music. Bad Retrojunkie spreading anti SMS propaganda! > My first computer was C64 but Sega Master System was my first console. I've spent more time on SMS than MD and Saturn but Dreamcast is still my favourite Sega console. I finished every Sonic game on the SMS. I've never finished a Sonic game on any other system (not because they are bad, I just never got around to it). I like the SMS version of California games a lot more than the MD version (SMS one has more events and was more about gameplay than graphics).
Being from Brazil, of course i have great memories of the Master System. Was is better than the NES / Famicom? Hell no! But i don't think it's fair to compare both, knowing that Nintendo held third party devs by contract. This alone gave the Master System no chance to compete. Still, the amazing support by Tectoy and no official Nintendo meant lots of people had Master Systems (side by side with their Nintendo clones). It was easy to rent games and trade with friends. The big Sega/Tectoy spaces in stores and the huge marketing campaign helped the console in Brazil. Some Master System games i always liked: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Rescue Mission, R-Type, Aladdin, Jogos de Verão (California Games), Choplifter, Double Dragon, Kenseiden, Super Cross (Enduro Racer), Zillion 2: The Tri Formation, Dead Angle, Vigilante, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Golden Axe, Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Master of Darkness, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, The Secret of Shinobi (Shadow Dancer), Astro Warrior, Ninja Gaiden, Mônica no Castelo do Dragão (Wonder Boy in Moster Land), Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate (Wonder Boy III: The Dragons Trap), Lucky Dime Caper, Deep Duck Trouble, Sagaia,... Probably forgot some others worth mentioning.
Impressive that Brazil did get a Master System SF II. Not a great port by any means but the fact the Master System Pulled off Street Fighter at all is impressive. It still suffered from what most Master System games did though, SLOW choppy gameplay.
What YouTube video was I watching! My bad! It does indeed have background music and it isn't too far off the C64 version! Found it, damn misinformation! I need to watch more than 30 seconds of a video in the future. They just don't feel as fast. Maybe it's that velocity engine they are missing... or blast processing. Either way, something isn't right! :highly_amused:
The Master System (2) was my first console, so I have an attachment to it. Hell yea there are some shit games on it such as F16-Fighter and any game that says "Great" in the title. Also tried to play Psycho Fox and just couldn't do it. BUT as has been said it had the gems too Ghouls and Ghosts (my favourite port as it is different to the rest as in how to build up armour etc), Asterix, Mickey Mouse games (shame the Donald Duck one's couldn't match), R-type. My original SMS2 has been modified a fair bit, sometimes I wish I modified another one, but the console is so much better now!
I recognize some of those games, I'll have to try out the others sometime. I haven't ever really looked for any sort of top games list for Master System. I know it's not a top # list but a favorites list is similar.
I remember in Australia Sega had Sega Ozisoft to help push and promote Sega merchandise. How much this helped or was meant to help I have no idea?
Bubble Bobble SMS version is by design an NTSC game. It was created and developed for 60hz. If using 50hz you'd be playing the entire game some 16% slower. Animations, movement speed, soundtrack...
Oh dear. I hadn't even thought of that aspect... and Kega Fusion confirms my fears. It's the same reason I thought that Wonder Boy was a little slow. First time I had played it was on a Mega Drive with the SMS converter and the Mega Drive was running in full screen mode (AKA 60Hz). But I didn't even realise until I tried to play it on the same unit again at 50Hz and it felt so wrong. I think I was born in the wrong region...
